Is MediaMVP still the obvious choice for remoting video from PC to TV? (eg DSM-320?)

For example if I just want to add an additional menu item that could be used to allow a custom PC process/application to be fired could we do this by modifying the MVP HTML and configuration? (i.e. would be overkill in this case to do a full GB-PVR plugin)

You can already do this. See the plug-ins screen in the config app. On the right hand side you can add custom taks, which are butttons that call exes - no programming required.

Yes but on the page http://gbpvr.com/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Custo...CustomTask there is the following statement?

"Unfortunatly, you’re best to not use custom tasks if you’re running an MVP client, since there is no way to show the information on the screen of the mvp."

You can still use them to fire off batch files.
3x MVPs (not used anymore)
XBMC
Hauppauge 150 via SVideo
Comcast Digital Cable
Motorola HD Cable box channel changed via Firewire
Vista Home Premium with RDP hack
AMD Athalon 64 5000+
340gig sata, plus 80SATA+3x160IDE Drives in XP machine for storage.

Urrrk. I don't actually have one but I've had another UPnP-AV device for over a year now (NetGear MP101) and I've done quite a bit of reading on UPnP-AV since then.

Quote:Are you saying it's a "dumb" box like the MVP? - The box needs to get all of the instruction from the server.
UPnP-AV 'clients' generally have more software of their own rather than just the ability to render media and pass control information back to the server. They still need servers though and, in most cases, the end user would use them the same way as I use my MVP with GB-PVR. UPnP-AV is as much a philosophy than anything else - a simple UPnP MediaServer only lets the client do simple things.

Quote:Does the DSM-320 use hardware decoders like the MVP? Or are they software decoders?
Don't know.

Quote:Depending on the above answers, someone can create a server that act's like an MVP client and serves the DSM-320 (a passthrough agent). I believe someone has a work-in-progress MVP client software.
More efficiently, a UPnP MediaServer application that interfaces directly with GB-PVR. That way, any UPnP-AV compliant device could use GB-PVR. Been thinking about it for a while now....yet another project I won't get time to do.

Yes, The DSM-320 has a RealMagic EM8476 A/V Streaming Processor
It can handle MPEG 1,2,4,some DivX,Some Xdiv, MP3,AAC(not supported by D-Link)

Currently I've been emailing D-Link asking them to add support for RemoteUI (Part of the UPnP Standard) If this was added, a GBPVR Interface would be fairly easy. There have been a few people trying to hack the DSM-320 which runs on Linux.

with my DSM, I decided to not use the D-Link Server, or Windows Media Connect. I found that the TVersity media server is the best (http://www.TVersity.com). Also when I control my DSM Remotely, I use Cidero (http://www.cidero.com) Although Cidero doesn't work as well as it did since the 1.06 Firmware upgrade occured. Hopefully Cidero will figure out what changed.

What I like about these products is they have the same philosophy as GBPVR. and free. Also I Believe these product compliment each other well.

I Just orderd my Hauppauge PVR-500MCE and will be installing GBPVR for the first time later this week, So I'll have more sugestions of what can be done.

Can you keep us posted on the DSM-320.

I know I would be interested in this device if it can work with GBPVR. Once I get my head above water with my business (if anyone is wondering my business is really starting to take off) I would be willing to do some leg work to get this device to work with our favorite PVR.

ditto - would be interested to hear more BrainStormer on this

Actually, considering a PC does a good job playing all video formats etc, I've been pondering what is the minimum/cheapest way of using one's PC for a PVR purpose (e.g. like GB-PVR), but whereby the PVR user interface on the TV is totally independant to the PC Monitor (i.e. for dual usage)

This would need independant sound for each & display (e.g. so the mouse doesn't accidentally drag to the TV, e.g. so its possible for the remote system like HIP to pass commands directly to GB-PVR without having to make it active first etc).

I'm not sure if this is possible via use of some PC plugin card or otherwise??? Perhaps the cheapest/minimal solution here is to either go for (a) DSM or MVP solution or (b) buy a new minimal PC to live near the TV???

As always Tipstir, you are on top of your game.

Well, does anyone know of any other set-top-box (STB) - the cheaper the better - that can handle HD quality, that does hardware encoding, and requires a server component for the UI?

The DSM-320 hasn't been replaced but there are other versions. There is the DSM-320RD that has a DVD player and media card reader in it. Also soon to be released is the DSM-520 which is the HD Version of the 320, but also supports WMV natively, I'm still waiting to see which RealMagic Chip they will use. But hopefully the one that supports H.264

The DSM-320 also has a brother, the Zensonic Z400, which has the same innards...

Being that GBPVR is new to me, if there is a way to have a script run when a recording is complete, I could have my TVersity Server add the program to my library so I can play it from my DSM. This would just be a starting place.

You can put a copy command in postprocessing.bat.
