Installing these components means that the default media player on windows will now play .ts files, and have all the decoders it might need. He might have a better chance of controlling that than VLC. @sub, which components would those be?

Installer from here https://github.com/Nevcairiel/LAVFilters...taller.exe, and I'd use the default options, which are both 64 and 32bit Splitter + Audio Decoders + Video Decoders. This will add .ts support, and support for the various decoders required for different audio/video formats that your machine might not be able to decode.

I found, in a box, an old generic remote with mouse control (not MCE) for Windows and connected its IR receiver to another PC to see what happened on VLC. The double-left and double-right arrow keys yield 10-second skips back and forward, respectively. I can also adjust the volume, pause and resume, and change from one recording to the next. This looks like it may be good enough for my purposes. Correct if if I'm wrong, but I've never given Kodi much thought because I'm under the impression that it's meant for streaming across a home network, and I have no need for that (or, in this specific case, not even the capability).

No Kodi is a goot media player and you play files for the local file system (or I wouldn't have suggested it)

Kodi will be more interested in the file name, if you bother scanning them. For these I wouldn't bother The XML is non standard.
