Hello my fellow Kiwis.

Just wondering where you get your DVD's cheap in NZ, or if you import most of them like me?

Do most of you buy them from a shop, or online?

I can't remember the last time I brought a DVD from a shop. I get annoyed that they take them out of the case and put them in those BS paper or plastic envelops, only to have them get small scratches all over them.

Just curious as I'm always looking for a cheap local supplier.

i just go to whitcoulls, once you buy 10 dvds you get a free one, ive gone thru at least a dozen of those cards.

can never be bothered buying them over the net. if i have to get them from america or somewhere i usually go to dvdworld on dominion road.

I've bought the odd couple from DVDBoxOffice.com. A Canadian site, with free freight.

Reven - I haven't brought a DVD from Whitcoulls for years. The last set I got was the "James Bond Boxset" only because it was 50% off, so saved a fortune. Isn't the place in Dominion Rd expensive because they get censor certification on R1 discs?

Psycik - I don't think DVDBoxOffice.com is doing free shipping any more. The only one I know of is Playcentric.com, but they have a really poor user rating so I've steered clear - and they aren't always the cheapest even with having to pay shipping.. I used to purchase virtually all my DVD's from DVDSoon.com (free shipping until recently), but they really slapped their customers in the face a while ago and I haven't brought a disc from them since. ( I personally found them better than their user rating) and have brought hundreds of discs from them, landing most for between $6 and $12 NZ. My price cutoff point for a DVD is usually $20NZ unless it's a title that really rocks or its a boxset.

This is a good search engine for R1 DVD's http://www.dvdpricesearch.com/

Another in Oz is http://www.dvdplaza.com.au

I still buy most of my R4 discs in Oz because even with shipping I can land them cheaper than I can buy them in NZ and they arrive shrinkwrapped with the discs never having been out of the box.

In Oz I use http://atlanticdvd.com.au/.

The best company I have ever used is http://www.ezydvd.com.au/ Their customer service is the best I've ever come across, but their prices kept getting more expensive the more stores they franchised and now they seem to only sell at retail online. Pity!

I find it difficult to believe local company's can't compete a little better with online stores. If they did, I would probably buy more discs in NZ, but at the end of the day the dollar does count.

I find it difficult to believe that in this day and age you can walk into a music store and say I want "Tiesto in Concert" And they say, "we can't get it". For pete's sake, buy it from Amazon, charge me $40, and you'd still be making a profit.

kiwikid, just looked at your oz sites, still looks like things are cheaper from amazon, maybe because what I'm looking for is slightly older so it's cheaper there, where in oz it's an import - i.e expensive. And I had a quick look on dvdboxoffice, it still has in it's page title, free worldwide airmail shipping. But yes, they are a bit more expensive than amazon sometimes.

Sorry to spy on your kiwi thread, but I thought I'd put my 2 cents (or whatever your equivalent might be ;-)) The guys over at http://www.dvd-wow.com (or cd-wow.com) have been great whenever I've bougth things. They don't have "everything", but they have reasonable prices for what they have. Free shipping worldwide. Might be worth checking with before buying elsewhere.

I just realized that region 4 might not be the easiest discs to find there. They do have some, at least some region free discs. If regions coding is not a problem, or if you're looking for CDConfused, it might still be worth a shot =)

psycik - yeah...I got busted. The title I checked out against DVDPrice Search obviously wasn't available at DVDBoxOffice, so I tried another title and it came up free shipping - so that is obviously still happening. Amazon is still coming up tops most of the time though and multiple purchases always makes the shipping cheaper. As for my Oz sites, I haven't purchased much there recently as most of the stuff I've brought is R1. Still, Atlantic's are the cheapest I've found in Oz and often are cheaper than I can get in NZ (like ST Enterprise Boxsets), which are approx the same price in the US landed in NZ - so may as well stay R4 and get PAL formatting.

stefan - checked out that site and will keep an eye on it. Seems like its a R2 site (I don't buy many UK discs, only when they are 16x9 and R4/R1 aren't) I use http://sendit.com/ as they have been good and reliable - the UK pound hurts sometimes though Sad

Must be more Kiwis that buy their DVD's somewhere?

They claim (in ther FAQ) that they mainly carry R1. Not sure I agree with them, though.
