I tried to tell everyone I wasn't the first to mention it. Oh well. I know I read about it on another GBPVR thread. But who cares as long as people enjoy it. But as I said I just wish we had access to program info though ORB.

You bring up an interesting idea about re-broadcasting. From a "home" country to where ever you are. Technology like this could redefine how people watch TV as did PVR's. Especiallly as the price of bandwith drops.

Also, with ORB you can watch live TV, the same way you would with GBPVR, it has a PVR feature built in, but I havent used it. I'm not sure if you can configure it to operate a STB. I record with GBPVR and watch with ORB when I'm away.

Lastly, Orb has an API available, that might allow it's ability's to be extended by programers who know what they are doing. (I am not a programer and I do not know what I'm doing.)

Here's a question to all of you Orb folks then--what if we created a mini-community of folks who "share" our TV. Is that possible? Or maybe certain recordings?

It could be global or local. A way I'm thinking about this is that I love to watch certain football games that are not broadcast in my area, but are in other areas. Someone with Orb can allow me to watch it through their system and vice versa... or another way is for someone like Sub who used to be a big fan of The Apprentice (I don't know if he still is) to be able to catch shows earlier than when released in the homeland.

What do you guys think? This will require some work, but it could be kind of a neat way to do TV.

Finally, since Orb also broadcasts on Media Player, I would imagine it's using the same stuff that GBPVR uses, right? I wonder if you can start Orb, broadcast something, and then have it display on gbpvr. And once in gbpvr, be able to record it if we want?? (I'm not a programmer either). For example, I get Saintalan's broadcast through orb, but I watch it through my gbpvr??

Hi, I think the problem with this, which I am sure will be overcome in time, is one of copyright and facing the wrath of the broadcasters.

My point was not broadcasting through Orb but through the Slingbox. Not sure if you can or not though Orb?

The difference with Slingbox is that it only permits 'narrowcasting' iow one-to-one. In this instance the party is actually subscribing (pay or otherwise) to watch their own programmes accross the net.

Thanks

I was able to save the Orb ASX playlist as a file, for music, as a file and play it back in GBPVR, You log into Orb, find your playlist (or song) instead of pressign the play button in orb right-click and "save link/target as" to a folder. Add the ASX file extension to GBPVR music directory and presto. It worked. Note: The playlist played but it did not appear as a list of songs in GBPVR. Just But it worked. I was not able to get a video file to do the same. Perhaps we need to make a formal request to the Plugin Developers.

As for sharing, video's its a great idea but it might not work. If you watch your computer that has Orb running when you play back a video, it ramps your CPU cycles and other resources up to 98%. As with other transcoding processes, it use all available CPU cycles unless something else is running. So if the computer "owner" was trying to do other work the "viewer" might have a bad viewing experience. Also (as I understand it), if the "owner" tries to playback a video it will stop the playback for the "shared viewer".

Now, since GBPVR users are from around the world it might work fine. Since I would be sleeping or at work form most week days my computer might be available for others to watch, but I could not guarentee it.

But I like the idea.

Sub, if your following this thread, is it possible to add ASX support? The ability to buffer a playlist video streem that is. (I'm sorry for asking, because I think I may have asked before)

As far as I know Orb does not "broadcast" A streem can't be watched by two people at the same time.

I'm pretty sure this was the intent of ORB, but it does have the "share" feature, for videos's and Pictures. But I don't think it does for music. Strange, I bet they are trying to avoid lawsuits.

The big difference of course us Orb is a set of free software. Slingbox is a piece of HardWare that costs money!

I still see this as really good potential for expats and families separated across the globe. Whilst I love the US if I lived their the TV would drive me mad. Not knocking the progs (West Wing /Sopranos/ Shield) etc just the ads etc. I would also miss (I mean my wife) the Soaps and UK dramas etc and for me English Soccer. I could of course offer to host a fan of my team living in the US and I could get progs from the US quicker than they reach UK.

Like I say at the moment its only bandwidth which holds me back.

Cheers, Alan
