I went to the XMLTV site as linked in the wiki. I downloaded the Windows package (the easy one where I don't need perl libraries or anything like that). I downloaded it, unzipped it, but it didn't install anything and there's no XML file to be found. What did I do wrong?

Also, once I get things up and running - what would everyone reccomend as the best settings for recordings to look best without using 2 GB per hour? (I have the Hauppauge USB2 PVR). Thanks.

Ok ... You downloaded it. It should be in C:\Xmltv
Not in program files(makes stuff easier)
First step is to configure it
open your command prompt found under start/accessories stuff.
If your not in your hard drive(c:\ normally)
type in cd c:\
to change it to your c drive.
Now you want to configure it. So type in
xmltv\xmltv.exe tv_grab_na_dd --configure
It will let you select some stuff and give you a code to use on labs.zap2it.com to sign up and select your area. (select your channels after you select your tv stuff)REMEMBER THE USERNAME AND PASSWORD FOR THAT.
Once all thats done your gonna wanna export your listings to a file
open command prompt and type in
xmltv\xmltv.exe tv_grab_na_Dd --output c:\xmltv\listings.xml
Now thats your listings.xml to load in your gb-pvr config Smile
enjoy.
As for quality you can select your quality coming into your pc when you setup your device in config for gbpvr.
Its probably better to use high quality or medium but if you need to save space try a lower quality 1 by 1 till you feel your satisfied with something that gives ok quality and takes up less space.
Also Support is GB-PVR support XMLTV is somethings else but used in it.

Well, it's not in c:/xmltv. When I unzip the file I downloaded, there ae a few files and folders and one exe. I opened the exe and one of the black command prompt boxes comes up for a second, nothing happens in it and it closes with nothing seeming to have changed.

Like dragonfiregum said you need to run xmltv from a command prompt initially (ie a old black dos type window). Click Start - Run and in the window that opens type cmd and then press enter. By the way if you live in the uk there is an easier way of generating xmltv listings!

I got up to entering a username. I did so and it told me about a password. I couldn't type anything, just hit enter. I then got "ERROR: Bad XML from DD, cannot continue" and it returned to the beggining of the command prompt.

I am having the same problem I am in north america. It is struggling at the point of entering the user name and password for zap2it when it comes to the password prompt after the username prompt it says

Warning: Storing the password in the config file is not secure if password is blank, it will be prompted as needed (more secure)
Unsecured password ('x':delete.defaultSadkeep).):

warning: error pursing DD xml: Error: Fetch Error401 Unauthorized at /PerlApp/grab/na_dd/tv_grab_na_dd line 705.

Partial XML follows:
<HTML><HEAD><TITLE>401 Unauthorized(TITLE></HEAD><BODY><X1)401 Unauthorized</X!></BODY></HTML>

ERROR: Bad XML from DD, cannot continue

---sorry for any typos i am reading off a tv with not the best resolution.

If you're in the USA, why dont you just use the zap2it EPG option? Its much easier and gets the same information as you'd get with xmltv without having to install and fiddle with all this extra software.

EDIT: I select zap2it, I already created an account online, I enter my username/password and click ok and when I go to "Update EPG" it says it's not configured properly.
