hi,

i've never tried to use hibernate until now as my laptop didnt support it. however, ive just got a new laptop with wake on lan enabled in the bios, so i've been trying to get it to wake for a scheduled recording.
Even though wake on lan is enabled, when i put the laptop in hibernate it never wakes up. if i put it in standby it works fine. Any idea why? i'd prefer to use hibernate if possible. I've looked through the forums and all i can find is that if its got WOL it should work.
The other thing i want to know is its fine getting it to wake up for a recording but is it possible to get it to go back into standby/hibernate after its finished recording?

thanks

you don't want WOl - that is for businesses and is a feature that allows them to wake pc's by sending a certain packet across the network.

leave all the wake on.. settings off and enable hibernate in windows. that should work.

to get it to go to sleep, set you windows power settings to go into standby/hibernate after x mins, say 30.

i think standby is best as it uses very little power and can wake up almost immediately.

Make sure that you don't have running processes in the background as this prevents the system from hibernating. You can check for background processes using the task manager and setting the sort to CPU (descending), the System Idle Process should take up most of the CPU cycles of your system (97-99%) for hibernate to kick in.

Hibernation is very tricky and sometimes doesn't work. I set my system to hibernate within 3-5 mins of idle time leaving very little time for the system to activate any background processes.

GBPVR wakes up for recordings and the OS should be handling the standby/hibernation portion, although I do wish that GBPVR can also do the standby/hibernation by checking whether the system is idle, oh well.

This thread from another forum is one i found when trying to sort my hibernate out, its a good reference point that explains most of the ins and outs of power management

also Sleeper is a really useful little tool that lets you test the various power states and wether your laptop is capable of waking itself up from them.

I just checked my power options status, and I discovered that if you have multiple users, each power option is different. Thus, if you set hibernate in one user for 5 minutes, the other users will not reflect this setting. When I set all the users to the same settings, hibernate is working more predictably.
