I know that transcoding can be done in the post processing batch file and selected as an option in the config utility, but there is no quick and easy "filter" some programs for transcoding but not others. Because transcoding typically takes a lot of time and resources (at least on my box), it seems that automatically transcoding everything is overkill - especially when I'll watch some programs once and delete them immediately.

I think it'd be cool if the option to transcode a particular recording or a reoccurring recording could be found right in the "record" dialog box. I think the biggest benefit would be that when the user selects to record a season, the season could be transcoded for long term storage. Since I suspect many people archive their favorite programs, the option to transcode is particularly nice to reduce the disk space required. Another area that this feature would be nice is for larger recordings like television movies that I might record with then intention of watching when I have some free time, but then sits on the hard drive for weeks until I find the time to watch it.

Moreover, I an option in the recordings menu to que an already recorded file for transcoding (in addition to the "play", "delete", and "exit" options) would be handy as well.

Alternately, if it turns out that coding this into the existing GUI is a PITA, then a separate menu / plugin might be more appropriate.

If someone is aware of a plugin or utility that does this let me know... I've scoured the forums and wiki, but not found an easy way to do this.

Cheers!

I was going to ask for precisely this feature!

I'd also like to see the transcoding option be a little more expanded so that I could use my own command line and not be tied to ffmpeg. Sure have the ffpmeg defaults but let me run something else instead. For example, mencoder (faster) and then I could save as mpg but reduce the bitrate instead of just converting to avi.

The only way I can see to do this easily and elegantly at the moment is to use the video archive plug in, use the feature to "archive" a file and then have dirmon watch for new files being added and then convert just the archived files.

True but the addition of an option to allow record+transcode surely doesn't seem like much? Smile

Basically just a filter to the gbpvr transcode queue.

If I want to do lots of things externally, I can already do that via batch files and other tools, I for one, would just like to be able to choose when setting up the recording, transcode this/don't transcode this.

I would this option after viewing a recording.

Transcode and store in archive folder, then delete original in recordings folder.

You'll have to add to my request for the video archive plug in then. Smile

That already moves to an archive folder, all it needs to do is add the item to the gbpvr access database transcode queue.

I do intend to add a feature to allow the user to select a transcoding when they schedule a recording, but I've not done it yet, so it wont be in the next release (v0.96 due soon).

i'm writing a 'plugin' of sorts that does just that...you can use ANY encoder you wish, multiples of profiles, even several different encoders if you like.. Smile

i added a way to add single files to the 'que' from the video archive screens, and still keep the overnight processing working! the progress works and i pulled off some tricks to make it kill the encoder when you hit 'stop' in the gbpvr dialog...[hehe] i was still working on some sample encoding profiles for other encoders [you can still use ffmpeg for certain things if you like, like psp]
and finally found a fix for mencoder's error resiliance..[field problems in some files]
you can use any encoder but i have to build in support for killing others i don't have in there already..[mencoder,ffmpeg,vlc]
it consists of 1 exe and 1 batch file..all encoding parameters editable there..
interested? Big Grin
