Hi,

I've got too many recording and need to compress. What s/w do you recommend to compress several recording? (e.g. .mpg to avi)

I guess:
(a) from a free/opensource perspective and
(b) commercial software (if its < $100) [I'll have to check if videoredo would do this)

Thanks

This looks promising, haven't tried it myself, though. Feel free to tell us if you find anything that works :-)

Edit: the actual link =)

Got to ask, what's wrong with mencoder or ffmpeg?. Can't get much more free than those and plenty of suggestions here on how to use them

Combine with dirmon and you can process the whole drive if you want.

I know it isnt free but i do all my stuff to mp4 using Nero Digital. Their recode app will do multiple files in one go, you can adjust the bitrate and trim the start and end points.
And GBPVR plays them just fine Smile

I'm just new to this area, so haven't worked out what the most used tools are yet - I'll look into the ones you've mentioned too then. I must admit, if there was a good program for $20-$50 that was to hide any complexity of having to use a multitude of freeware/opensource tools togeter to get the job done, I'd probably buy it.

I have used AUTO GK, its free and allows you to load set up multi file conversions. End result looks good but the AVI's it creates can give trouble on the MVP. It sometimes changes the frame rate which and cause audio sync issues on the MVP.
GBPVR Server:
AMD Sempron 3300+, 1gb DDR, 100, 200 & 500gb HDDs, DVD -/+RW PVR150 RETAIL, PVR150MCE.
GBPVR 1.0.16, SKIN'S = Default Blue, PLUGIN'S = None

media coder actually is just a front end for mencoder...
there are several solutions out there, and ffmpeg is built in/comes with gbpvr Smile
i didn't like that it worked on *all* my recordings so i built a 'proxy' app that lets you use any encoder with the built-in gbpvr finctions Smile
was doing some fine tuning but it's really ready, and let's you encode anything you can get to from video-library or can be used from command line if needed too..i include profiles for mencoder and ffmpeg and vlc but everything is changable in batch file..

I've used Autogk, Staxrip, and even Virtualdubmod standalone. My personal favorite though is avi.net. The smooth filter is worth it alone, albeit avi.net only encodes cbr mp3. It does encode ac3 audio.
