Sounds to me like the poopli idea for replaytv ported to gbpvr, no? Hardly an original idea Wink But it would be great if possible.

I wasn't suggesting a new protocol for transferring the files, but I'd be able knock something up to run on my central gbpvr.com server to help users find the ip address of other users.

You are right the ftp is a good idea. The reason I was think of Java was the fact that I am still very new to C# and am not familiar with C# GUI very well. I can create forms [Image: smile.gif].

most people would not have a connection fast enough t watch the stream. And it would be nice to schedule it to run at night. Legality depends on the kind of movie you download.

I think it goes beyond this. videohelp.com is a pretty good place to find out more on this bit.

I was thinking more along the lines of a protocol for scheduling which would be application independent. But again this feeds into the point of "legality". The transferring between machines is pretty straight forward.

Well thats what MS want you to believe [Image: biggrin.gif]

Should probably consider using something like SSL as well, just to keep unwanted eyes out.  I use stunnel and it works very well.

Also, here is source for a C# FTP Server I happened to stumble across.

Hi Guys, my $0.02 worth:

In order to avoid reinventing the wheel, couldn't this great concept be implemented with an off the shelf kazaa type component?

To keep things simple I think a centralised naming broker should be avoided - it is also reinventing the wheel. Those witb dynamic ips can use a dynamic dns service such as http://www.dyndns.org - it is free.

Cheers,

I think the transfer part is something that will be relatively easy to do. Its basically a choice of which existing method to use. The main problem is querying your "buddy's" scheduler to see if you can use that machine to record a programme.

I started playing with this a little. I downloaded filezilla server and some C# source for an FTP client.

I have modified it to take a configuration script which allows you to batch commands. So I can tell it to change to this directory and recursively download this directory to this location.

I havent tried it out yet, besides some local unit tests. [Image: smile.gif]

I have also writen an app that you can run and it will place a file in each of the recorded show directories which has the same name as the mpeg but with .txt at the end that has the following info from the database

title=The West Wing
description=Election night draws to a close.
fullfilename=F:\movies\The West Wing\TheWestWing_20040909_12001300.mpg
filename=TheWestWing_20040909_12001300.mpg
starttime=9/9/2004 12:00:00 PM
endtime=9/9/2004 1:00:00 PM
uniqueid=EP3169910078

That way schedule this to run on the host machine. I am now playing with the importer, so I can import the text files back into the database.

There are a lot of the middle pieces of this puzzle which I have not started with yet.
