So, i finally snapped and swore that i would fix this gaming problem once and for all. Since sub seems unwilling to provide any help in optimizing gbpvr itself i just had to find another solution.
other pvr softwares seemed to be of little help, not a single one sounded as good as gbpvr (this software just rocks, thats the way it is) and most of them had threads about lag in console gaming.
thus, i started experimenting with different setups in order to get rid of the lag in gbpvr.
Now, the LivePreview trick (http://www.cask-of-montillado.com/pvr_reg.html) gets rid of the lag in a way. To be exact it gets rid of the lag in wintv2000 but not gbpvr. I've opened a ticket concerning this with hauppauge.
Is there any information you can provide concerning this which might help me out sub? Like what components gbpvr use to talk to video decoders and tv cards?
Now, until hauppauge or sub sees fit to fix this i'm concerning this way closed, its just too much that can go wrong to just sit on our asses and wait.
At this point it occured to me that wintv works alright and it might have some command arguments to send.
Sure enough there are. In my case my ps2 is hooked up via a tv-converter (costed about $15 or something) so my ps2 is on channel 72.
A few minutes of experimenting later i have a fairly nice way of integrating wintv2000 into gbpvr.
1. Activate LivePreview. previously i had problems with interlacing and general rips in the picture using livepreview, with drivers 2.2 it works just fine though so update that if you're having trouble.
2. Install wintv2000
3. Configure all gaming consoles you want in wintv2000, make sure you put them in the All Channels suite.
4. In gbpvr's config utility, add a new custom plugin. The executable is wintv2k.exe and the arguments are these: -nss -c72 -mtv
5. Done!
Let me explain quickly what we did. By creating a custom plugin we create a menu item that starts wintv2000 with the arguments we specified.
-nss gets rid of the splashscreen, making the software seeming more integrated.
-c72 tells wintv2000 to go to channel 72, if you just have one console you might just as well leave wintv2000 at that channel and it will use it as default when starting. Also, if you are using two consoles you might just as well leave this out since the channel buttons on the remote control will switch channels just as in gbpvr (neat huh?)
-mtv doesnt acutally give you a one year subscription to mtv via a cable provider, it initializes m(ode)tv - or fullscreen to use more common terms.
Now, what problems and advantages does this approach give us? Wintv2000 has a few nice functions we can utilize, not only does it support the remote control in the same way gbpvr does but you can specify a recording directory to the same place that gbpvr uses and recordings of gaming will seem very much like an integrated part of gbpvr. I already noted that you may switch between as many consoles as you wish by using the channel buttons on the remote, thus making it possible to just have a menu item in gbpvr that says Games.
I've encountered a few problems, when in tv mode you have to press power twice for wintv2000 to exit and return to gbpvr, i can live with that. also, depending on your environment you might want to check the "Hide gbpvr..." checkbox in the custom plugin window.
Hopefully this will help someone, it is very dependent on your environment, the usage of both a hauppauge card and a hauppauge remote control for example but i think you're gonna find a way to make it work even if you don't use gbpvr in the same way i do.
Please ask if anything is unclear.
Cheers
