VB is windows only. C++ can I think be used on others (linux unix etc) or that may be C - I think they're similar though.

i would also recommend starting with java, its very similar to c# and works on most OSs. also if you plan to go to uni and do CompSci in the near future they will probably teach you that.

VB isnt the nicest language to read, its got a funny structure, eg
Dim x As Integer = 10;
in c#, c++, java its
int x = 10;

also the online java tutorial and java api are really good, you wont need to buy a book.

i also recommend checking out online lectures from universities, CompSci 101 lecture will be a great help. checkout http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz that should get you going.

vb and asp are essentially the same language. if you learn vb, you'll be able to build the backend to windows hosted websites. you wont be limited to just software, but online applications as well.

as it is, once you learn one, you can slowly pick up on others, its all the same concept. kill two birds with one stone with vb and asp. then again c and java are very close too. come to think of it. i know java... wonder how i would do with c... lol

Do not start C++ first it's a difficult first language, some concepts such as pointers and oops etc may be difficult to learn is you haven't programmed before.
