I have a new MVP that is giving me fits. My GBPVR machine is in the basement wired into a 4port wireless router. My MVP is also wired to the router. I cannot get past the "connecting to server" screen.

This is what I know:
DCHP is turned on for my router and is handing out IP addys to my GBPVR machine as well as a wireless laptop connection.
Firewall is currently disabled.
I am able to get the MVP to connect to the Hauppage software, but not to GBPVR when I stop the hauppage software.
I have set the # or servers to autostart to 1 in GBPVR config.
GBPVR MVP server is running.
I know I'm getting sick of running up and down the stairs so much.
I also know that my wife is pissed cause she can't watch the episode of Desperate Housewives I recorded for her (I swear its for her!!).

I got GBPVR to work once yesterday (and it worked really well), but I don't know how I did it. Then when I went into GBPVR config to tweak some settings (only autoskip feature and MVP Screen Position) it wouldn't reconnect tonight. Please help. I'm sure its something dumb. I'm not a huge networking guru or anything so if you could use small words it would probably help. Thanks

PS I have read the following pretty thoroughily but I'm not sure how much I understood:

Have your tried turning off the router and turning it on again?
Just a thought.

I would try rebooting your PC and disconnecting the power from the MVP so it reloads.

What stage is the MVP getting to? "Connecting to Server....." stage?

I have rebooted my router, but I will reboot my machine tonight after work and see what that does.

Last night I follwed word for word this paragraoh from http://gbpvr.com/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/FAQ/MVP#toc:

"With MVPMediaSvc disabled (or uninstalled, or never installed), and with a working DHCP-server on your network, follow the same procedure as for the Hauppauge S/W, i.e. unplug the power cord from the MVP, and start GBPVR. At this point GBPVR pushes the dongle.bin (this file is in the gbpvr directory) to the MVP, after the powerplug is re-attached to the MVP. Note that it can take a while for the GBPVR main screen to appear."

It got to "loading Application screen, but hung there for like 20 minutes. I went to bed and left it. This morning it was at "connecting to server" screen.

Thanks for the replies. I'll try rebooting my machine and post any results

I have also gotten problems lately to get the connection to the GBPVR.

First, from cold start I have to boot the MVP with the original Hauppage MVP software or it will never get pass "the third square" in the boot screen.

Now it usually connects ok to my PC. but when failing, ie by timeout (I guess it's a timeout) trying to play an avi file. I can't seem to get it working again. Even rebooting my PC does not make it 100% certain of connection success.
It usually comes back eventually, but I have not figured out exactly what I need to do...

tipstir Wrote:Can you ping the MVP or see the DCHP clients on the Router, if not theirs your problem right there.

I saw what I thought was the MVP on my router and I was able to ping the IP address, but I'll make sure after work tongiht

tipstir Wrote:Make sure you're not running MVPMedia Services there are two that come with MVP unit, they either need to be removed or disabled.

I have disabled them both by going into Admin tools in XP and stopping them both as well as setting them to manual, but I can remove them if it won't cause any damage.

tipstir Wrote:You can force GBPVR to run Media MVP Server you'll find that in the gbpvr menu item under start/programs/gbpvr

Then run Config to click okay to force and update.

I'm not sure I follow what you're saying here. I have set up Config to autostart GBPVR MVP Server and it is running already. Are you saying that I should also run another session from teh start menu? I had tried this as well last night (grasping at straws Smile ) but it didn't make a change

I orginally had loads of problems with getting the MVP to start without using the Hauppauge software.

A very old post in the forums suggesting using TFTPD32, **not just for DHCP but also for TFTP to load the dongle.bin**. This was the only thing that got my MVP "standalone". I had thought that GBPVR was able to supply the dongle.bin itself but it didn't work for me...

You probably have a nice router to do your DHCP but give the stuff below a try it might help!

Stuff below pasted from 2004.....

Hi Darren,

All you need is a dongle.bin and tftpd32.exe (it does not need to be installed). When you run tftpd32.exe for the first time you need to change some settings. I'm no expert on this and I don't know what the defaults are (I may have changed things that didn't need to be changed just to get it working the first time...), but this is what works for me:

- click 'Settings' to open the Settings dialog
- set the directory where your dongle.bin resides as the 'Base Directory'
- in 'Global Settings' only enable 'TFTP Server' and 'DHCP Server'
- in TFTP Security select 'Standard'
- I don't think I've changed this, but in TFTP configuration, set 'Timeout' to 3, 'Max Retransmit' to 6 and 'Tftp port' to 69
- In 'Advanced TFTP Options' select only 'PXE Compatibility' and if you want 'Show Progress bar' and 'Hide Window at startup'

Restart Tftpd32.exe and select the 'DHCP server ' tab.

- select an 'IP pool starting address' and 'Size of pool' that do not conflict with any DHCP servers you already have running (e.g. in an internet gateway); the pool size should equal the number of MVPs you have connected
- set 'Boot File' to dongle.bin
- set 'WINS/DNS Server' and 'Default router' to '0.0.0.0'
- set 'Mask' to your subnet mask (probably 255.255.255.0, but you can run ipconfig to make sure)
- leave 'Domain Name' empty and 'Additional Option' set to 0
- don't forget to push the 'Save' button

Now it should work...

If questions remain, please let me know.

Regards,

Jan

Well crap. No luck. Here's my recap:

MVP is stuck at "connecting to server"

-McAfee firewall is shut down
-XP Firewall is shutdown as per tipstirs dos command
-Tried using TFTpd32 to assign an IP addy that was in a different series than what my router assigns. (is this right, my router assings in teh range of 192.168.0.xxx and I set up TFTpd32 to assign based on 10.0.0.xxx)
-Have rebooted my GBPVR machine
-Have restarted my router
-MVP software is stopped
-Tried goin into Config, setting servers to autostart to 0, disconnecting power from MVP, manually opening a MVP server, then powering up MVP
-My router has assigned an IP address to teh MVP and I can ping it with no probs
-MVP boots into teh MVPsoftware no prob if I enable it.

I'm plum out of ideas (not that I really had any in teh first place) Anyone else got suggestions for me to check?

Thanks for all the help thus far, even if it hasn't gotten me there yet. If I can get this solved consistently I will be firing off my donation to Sub soon.
Zach
