MVP hanging (when it finally connects)

Hello,
First of all, great software, great help in the forum. I've been recording things via gbpvr for a couple of weeks but finally bought a MVP to remove the need to ensure that the gbpvr window is focussed. (using tv out on my graphics card.) That end all works fine.

The problem I'm getting is now I've purchased a MediaMVP and the best I've managed so far is about 15 minutes of net radio playing (I turned it off then so the only time it didn't hang.)

It very rarely gets beyound the 3 blue blocks. When it does, it connects ok (IP address given via router) but if using the software which came with it it hangs whenever I press a button on the remote control. If I use gbpvr it brings up the menu then crashes.

I've swapped the cable (25m) I was using for a shorter one...now I can't get past 2 blue blocks!

I'm using a netgear DG modem/router to link to the MVP and pc. I've opened a few ports as suggested elsewhere. Firewall is also off on the pc. Any ideas what may be causing this?

The other problem is it's a D3 model. I know this has problems, would this cause the above? If so, is it better to swap with hauppauge or return to where I bought it from? (although won't they just swap out another probable D3 model?)

The only port you should need to open on your router is user-defined and if you wish to use the web-interface to schedule recordings. There's no need to open ports on your router for the MVP.

The only ports you would need to open would be on your PC's firewall, but as you say, you have this turned off.

My Media MVP is plugged into a wireless router which is then linked to another wireless router (wirelessly), which is plugged directly into the computer with GBPVR. Works great.

groover, yep connected fine to gbpvr via the web, that side works perfectly.

If nothing is needed for the mvp apart from the firewall off then that's all set-up ok.

I just tried again today and this time managed 3 button presses (on the original mvp software) before it rebooted and hung. Then wouldn't connect again after rebooting the mvp and restarting the server software. Is this a symptom of the D3 revision?

I'm not sure (you may want to check the shspvr forum, or do a topic search here) but I think the problem with the D3 version was related to overheating, ie it would start acting up if it was on a while. I've got two D3A's and they work fine.

If I were you I'd return it for another either way, either at the retailer or direct to Hauppauge; from what I've read they have been pretty "no fuss" about changing them as it's an acknowledged problem.

Again, you may want to search and check my memory is correct.

The overheating problems with D3 are from a tantalum capacitor that was installed backwards (reverse polarity) from what I have read. That is a dangerous situation as it could eventually blow up or melt down. Better send it back to Haupaugue; I think they are willing to exchange them.

Thanks for all the responses. I phoned up hauppauge and they told me to send it back to Dabs where I bought it from. Hopefully I won't get a D3 in return, they said that Dabs shouldn't have had any D3 boxes anyway. Sounded as if they'd tried to recall them.
