Hi.

I think I got a defective MVP, but want to make sure.

I get an image & sound if the I connect the white/red/yellow cables from my MVP to my SD TV.

When I try to use the S-Video connection, I get a scrolling screen which goes side ways very distored. It's not the cable as the same cable work just fine on other devices. I tried powering down/up TV, software, MVP all to no avail.

Does this sound like a defective MVP?

Go into the config for MVP and make your adjustments in there. It might be set to S-Video by default and could explain why you're not seeing any video? Also you should be using S-Video Cable 5-pin type which would give you better picture, if you have one of those around the house, even a cheap one will work just for testing. If you still don't get a Picture try another TV set?

I am a newbie, so pleae forgive my dumb questions.

I installed the MVP software that came with my MediaMVP and disabled GBPVR. On the MVP hooked up to my TV, I see menus and config, but I cannot see anything related to S-Video in the MVP config file.

As for the S-Video 5 pin cable - I am confused. I see 4 pins but not 5. I also looked at the MediaMVP connected and it only has 4 pins. My TV also has 4 pins. So I am a bit confused if there is another type of cable alled "5 pins"?

I don't remember any setting on the MVP related to S-Video. You connect either the s-video or the composite to the appropriate input on your TV and it should work. Be sure your TV is set to accept the s-video input...it may have a setting to to select it (or it may not Smile ). I don't know of a 5-pin cable either unless you count the shield as the fifth pin but it's actually the metal part of the connector. Do you have another s-video source to feed into the TV to see if it works? I use s-video on both my MVPs and it works fine. The quality is definitely better than the composite output.

Yes. I have 2 other sources that I connect my TV to them via the S-Video and I get a nice clean picture on my TV. I am using the same cable - when I connect it to source A, I get a picture. When I connect it to the MVP, I get the distorded and scrolling side ways image I am talking about.

Well, it sounds like you've eliminated everything but the MVP. Unless there's some setting for the s-video on the MVP, and I don't think there is, it certainly sounds like it's the culprit here. Bummer. Hopefully you'll be able to exchange it.

There's lots of info on the MVP, and most other things Hauppauge, over at http://www.shspvr.com/. You might want to check over there but it sure sounds like a bad MVP.

Ok, I found the problem. Bad MVP - S-Video connection is bad. Everything else is ok.

I know this becaue I hooked up another MVP and it all worked just fine. Thanks all for your input and help.
