I'm about to head out on the road for a month.

Rather than wait until I get back, I'd like to be able to switch to lower-res versions of my shows while I'm on the road so that I can download them faster.

I looked at the Capture Settings on GB-Config and could not see any way to specify MPEG-1 encoding (VCD or SVCD).

Questions:
1) What parameter values should I use in GB-Config to record to a VCD-compliant stream? What about SVCD?

2) For a given file size, would I get a higher quality picture by instead backing off the bit rate/resolution and using MPEG-2 instead? If so, what values would people suggest?

I'm trying to keep each hour of programming at 500 MBytes or less.

Thanks!

Personally, I'd just stick with a low resolution low variable bitrate MPEG2 file, but since your want to know...

You open direct.ini and set OutputType=11 for VCD or OutputType=12 for SVCD. Set this in the appropriate profile section of the file.

I think you're kidding yourself.

Well, these are just to watch on my laptop. I don't mind viewing a smaller version if it saves me hours and hours of downloading.

I'll give your suggestion a try.

Thanks!

What about these other parameters:
VideoResolution=1
BitRate=6000
AudioSampleRate=1
AudioBitrate=11
AudioOutput=0

If I set "OutputType=11" (or 12), do I also need to set these other parameters to specific values to be VCD- or SVCD-compliant?? If so, what values?

I cant remember. I dont think so. I've never really recorded using these VCD or SVCD settings. Try it and see.

Sounds like a good time to try the EWA video streamer. You can stream at low bit rates or stream it to a file and watch it later with the VLC client.

Have it auto encode to xvid... I have xvid encoded shows at 175mbs per half hour...So 350mb for an hour? And it looks just as good as mpeg 2 source if not better...

Where would I find out more about this?? I did a search on these forums for "VLC" but didn't find much.

I'm using a Hauppauge PVR-500 MCE Dual-tuner card.

It does not appear to support recording to xvid (at least as far as I can see).

How would I set this up? Post-process to xvid?? With what--the processing tab of GB-Config? If so, it looks like I'd have to do that with *all* recordings, not just selected ones that I want to watch when on the road.

I was hoping to be able to choose a very-compressed format on a show-by-show basis (Custom1 or Custom2).

Do-able??

Thanks,

See the 'Processing' tab in the config app. Set the times of day you want the auto conversion to occur, and the type of conversion.
