Previously the google used to be reasonably on topic. I'd see ads for companies selling DVB equipment etc. The last few weeks I've been getting really strange ads about vacuums etc.

I know the ads vary depending on where you are and what words are on the page, but what sort of ads are you seeing? Anything on topic?

While typing this I'm looking at a (very cheesy) Lypha web hosting add.

Yeah, I know - they're a bit annoying. I dont really like having ads on the site, but they're a necessary evil. I havnt pimped the site out as much as some do though - you know, like they ones that cover the page in ads and have a postage stamp sized bit of content in the middle.

The ads don't seem as on topic to me either. I used to always see ads for pcalchemy or other sites selling related hardware. But, I have always seen lots of Lypha and other web hosting ads also.

I also hang around a site that supports my cellphone service here in the states, sprintusers.com, and you have to scroll down about a page and a half to actually get to the posts on the forum.

I'm sure that you need to generate revenue somehow, and the google ads are not obtrusive at all. However, when I was thinking about buying a new remote for my system and thought that I could at least click on an ad for pcalchemy the next time it popped up and maybr you'd get some credit for me actually leaving the site and making a purchase. However, I tried a few different hardware threads and never got them to pop up.

Maybe you could have a separate page for affiliate advertising that we could launch from to generate click revenue? I know that byopvr has several static ads. Of course, I don't really know anything about online advertising.....

Yes, I agree, and I would like to have some more targetted advertising for things that GB-PVR really would buy, but its not so easily setup. I'm happy with the Tranquil PC advertising in the top right of the page. They make good machines, ideal for the GB-PVR HTPC audience, so it was a good match.

I've also tried to contact pcalchemy about advertsing before, but I dont think they'd want to "encourage" my project, given they actively sell BeyondTV/SageTV licenses. I'll try to think of some other hardware sales site that might be useful...

That's a shame since I order stuff from there as they are cheap and their office is about 30-45 min away from me. Gotta love the politics of business.

I see a bunch of ads for umm classified ads.
I used to see tuner card links.
I would sometimes click them to see if there were any deals.

True, but as long as it's a one way street and you're just funneling hardware buyers to them I don't see why they would object. Well actually I do, since their contracts with Beyond TV and Sage to sell bundles are probably more profitable than just selling hardware.

This project has got to be major competition for Sage and BTV since GBpvr has pretty much the same if not more functionality. Especially sage with wanting a separate license (fee) for me to stream to an mvp.

quietpc.com (international) would be relevent to HTPCs in general.
