I've been doing some research about the different version of PVR software available and have a question.
Is GB-PVR better than Knoppmyth and Mediaportal?

I would say: You have to find out yourself. One persons thinks this, and another one says this...

No one can really answer your question. Perhaps you should go more into detail and explain exactly what you're awaiting, which hardware your using and so on...

Consider where you are posting this question... you will get a bias answer. Big Grin I never tried any of the Linux pvr's but I spent a fair share of (wasted) time with MediaPortal. GB-PVR and its support are both awesome! 'nuff said. Smile

Try them both, but be warned: GB-PVR and many other pieces of software will NOT work properly on a machine that also have MediaPortal installed on it, it has been documented in a few spots here in the forums. I believe that MediaPortal was trying to change some code and make its app play a little nicer with others, but I am not sure if it ever happened or not.

I've tried Knoppmyth, but it wasn't too easy to set up. I also tried Mythdora, which was a bit easier to set up but I really don't know too much about configuring anything in Linux. I've done some reading about Mediaportal and noticed that people were having speed issues.

I'm looking for something that is easy to setup, has a speedy interface and packed with as many features/plugins as I can use.

Currently my hardware specs are as follows:
P4 Socket 478 2.66GHZ & Asus Board
Nvidia FX5200 w/DVI and S/Video
Creative Audigy Platinum 2
Hauppauge PVR 150MCE w/Remote and IR Blaster
120GB HDD
DVDRW
1GB Ram
IR Keyboard/Mse Combo (Don't have yet. Any suggestions for something compact?)

I'll be using this setup with Comcast analog cable in New Jersey, so I think it's a fairly simple setup. I will also be using the vga output directly to my tv since it supports 800x600 vga input.

I have a lot of music(mp3's) and some avi and mpeg movies that I would like to be able to play through the system.
I have some pictures that I would like to be able to setup as slideshows.
I want to be able to copy DVD's onto the HDD for playback at later time, maybe even shrink them down to a smaller size.
I want to be able to record TV shows and burn them to DVD's.
I want to be able to check the weather.
I want to be able to read rss newfeeds.
I want to be able to play internet radio.

If any other plugins are available for GB-PVR, please let me know as I would gladly consider using them. I think the more plugins you have, the better system you'll have.

I would also like to be able to control all the features via the MCE remote control.

Let me know if all these features are currently working features in GB-PVR.

Thanks,

Rocky

In this case:

GB-PVR is the one for you to go Smile I recommend you to have a look within the GB-PVR WiKi and read the first steps.

You will also find outstanding support from the developer (named "sub") and the community here, with no fear of "being taken to the woodshed" as a newbie.

to be honest I prefere freevo to myth just because you can use it with some wimpy hardware.
And GBPVR to the rest.

I tried myth & all I can say is the myth forum has a lot of jerks on it.

I tried some of the other free pvr softwares & not only was GBPVR the easiest to set up, the forum actually helps people.
If someone asks a question that was allready asked a bunch of times 1 of 2 things happen.
No one responds or someone responds with a link to the relevent post.

Try to take the equivelent of the software encoder card question to a myth forum & you'll get flamed.

at least here people just refer you to the software encoder card plug-in.

You know what, that is exactly what I noticed. This forum is very friendly and I respect that. I will definitely give GB-PVR a try and keep everyone posted. If I encounter any problems, I'll be sure to search through the forum for answers.

Thanks again guys.
