I can see that there are brightness and contrast controls in direct.ini and they they range 0-100. My ATI 550 seems to accept values from 0-255, where 128 is "normal".

My question is, does this equate to 50 being "normal" in GBPVR (128 on the card) and 75 being 192 etc?

There doesn't seem to be a volume control in there, I assume "gain" is for the image. Can the volume be fixed by direct.ini, it is a little loud at times and sounds as though it is clipping irrespective of system volume.

The actual range supported by each card varies. GB-PVR takes the value as a percentage, but queries the device for the supported range, then adjust as appropriate. So, if your ATI 550 supports 0-255, then 50 will be mapped to 128, 75 will be mapped to 192.

Personally I just stick with AUTO.

GB-PVR doesnt adjust the recording volumes at all. You just get the default for your capture card.

This is a common problem with Hauppauge cards. GB-PVR has nothing to do with capture volume. You have to manipulate the driver directly.

There is a Hauppauge Tweak Tool out there; I've used it but found that directly manipulating the driver's registry keys worked better.

Here's a good starting point for digging into Hauppauge stuff.

Here's the best source for registry driver tweaks, as well as a link to the Tweak Tool.

Have fun!

EDIT: I'm an idiot, I just notice you're using an ATI receiver card so all my Hauppauge-centric info won't be useful for you. Well, maybe it'll be helpful to others stumbling on this thread.

Thank you both. I am sure your info will be useful to someone, and once you have bothered to type out a comprehensive reply like that, it seems a shame to waste it.Big Grin

I have the ATI TV settings tool but I don't know when this actually sets the card, at boot up, once only when run, or saves values to EEPROM etc. GBPVR sometimes comes on quiet and sometimes I can hear that it is clipping in live TV.

If I find a way to fix it, I will let you all know. It is probably a driver issue.

I experience the same issue.

The volume in the ATI TV Settings is defaulted every time GBPVR launches, so it would be really good if you could adjust the record volume in GBPVR.

just update to the latest ati drivers and the control panel volume setting will stick, i had the same issue before the latest drivers came out. i guess it was an unspoken bugfix (typical of ati to not list the bugfixes of their updates...)
with mine set to 160 (from a default of 128) it is perfect. can't really comment on the clipping though, as i use an optical connection to my receiver and never have clipping.

Thank you, that fixed it (one less problem to worry about now - cheers).

I did try the latest ATI drivers (6-10_xp_t550_wdm_36790) and they seem to be the ones with the problem. If I go back to 6-9_xp_t550_wdm_35774, it seems to lock the vol as you say. I am using SPDIF out of an SBLive! into a Yamaha amp.

The other problem is that seems to be a different audio delay between LIVEPreview and recording payback. I have tried to dial it out with FFDSHOW but there is more experimentation ahead.

There is an ongoing lip-sync bug with the 550 driver in that the capture filter output pins have different delays between raw video (no delay) and analogue audio (delayed). However if you configure GBPVR for 'encoder pass-through' which uses the MPEG2 output of the capture filter then the video and audio are equally delayed.
