hi gang . . .

I recently set up my new MVP (1000). I installed the Hauppauge MediaMVP software. The videos looked fine on my TV. The only problem I've had is the unit resetting when playing Net Radio.

Anyhow, since I really like GBPVR on my pc I thought I would try it as a replacement for the Hauppauge software for my MVP.

I have followed all the directions regarding uninstalling Hauppauge software and setting GBPVR as the server.

However, the picture quality on my TV is very poor. The menu text looks very jagged and fuzzy. When I play a recording, the video is also grainy and unclear. Nothing like what I had with the Hauppauge software. The menu screen of the GBPVR is also shifted to the right by a couple of inches. Selection of menu items can be very slow . . . Don't mean to overly complain . . . but I am lost as to why the GBPVR is having such problems as a server. (I have done searches on the topic, but came up empty)

I have the latest software for GBPVR. My router is a D-Link DI-624. I have a wired connection. And . . . the tv I have is an 27" older Sony.

Any advice would greatly be appreciated since I want to use GBPVR for all my PVR requirements . . .

Thanks

Peter

i had similar issues heres what i did
1) grainy video on playback - for me livetv was fine - only playback was grainy. to test manually change a pending recording to use the high quallity profile - if that fixes the issue you need to manually change the quality of medium recording profile to be similar to that of the high quality profile - this is done in the gbpvr config app

2) off center screen - use the plugin (MVP Position) to try and find the best position - and then so you dont have to keep that plugin edit the config.xml file to reflect those setting you made note of - the settings are changed near the bottom of the config file - there is a note in there not to change the settings but i dont know if the directly relates to the MVP location

- <!-- position
-->
<MVPWidth>624</MVPWidth>
<MVPHeight>500</MVPHeight>
<MVPOffsetX>44</MVPOffsetX>
<MVPOffsetY>40</MVPOffsetY>

hope these help you.

cheers

Thanks for the response Skip,

I will try the tip you gave regarding the off center screen Smile

As for the quality, I record everything at high quality. However, the poor quality extends from the OSD right through to videos, whether live or play back of a prerecorded video.

The OSD is so hard to read that I need to stand about 3 feet away in order to read the text. It is fuzzy and and jagged. The fact that my output to my tv is so bad overall (unless I use the Hauppauge supplied software) makes me wonder if I am missing something for the GBPVR server setup.

Just to clarify, I have not added any patches or different drivers to my MVP setup. The current version I have for the MediaMVP software is 3.2.24206. The current version I have for GBPVR is 98.13b.

Don't know if there is a connection to the quality issue, but I also have extremely slow response to channel change when trying to view Live TV with the GBPVR. Wondering if my router setup could be causing ALL the problems . . .

Thanks again,

Peter

Which dongle are you using? Which output on the MVP are you using?

Since you have good picture with the Hauppage MVP software, you can copy the dongle from the hauppage hardware folder and drop it into the gbpvr's dongle folder to see it will get better with the picture. Reload the dongle to MVP before you test for quality.

Some of the OSD screens are hard to read on the MVP with the default skin. The Hauppauge one is very simple and they get away with it. You may want to try some other skins, expecially the ones the skinners designed for the MVP with large fonts. Also, use a decent Svideo cable to the TV instead of the composite outputs. As far as the grainy playback goes, I can't help you. You can't tell the difference between my TV's tuner and my recorded shows over the MVP on a 34" CRT. And that is with the quality set to medium (or whatever the default is).

Yep, what they said. The Hauppauge software uses pretty big fonts on simple backgrounds.

It also varies from TV to TV. I've got a regular older Sony TV here in my office that looks perfect with the MVP - all text easily readable, yet if I plugin the exact same MVP into my Mitsubishi TV in the bedroom it is hard as hell to read.

If yours doesnt read well, you might need to try a skin with bigger fonts.

Remember that there is a built in 'Live TV preplay delay' in milliseconds (user setting) when watching live TV through GBPVR on the MVP. This preplay delay will make channel changing appear slow as the GBPVR server buffers X milliseconds of delay.
