I am wondering if there is any news on this.
Thanks!

Just of note, I have a Xbox 360 and am trying to use Orb as a server. This functionality (for Wii and PS3 as well) is built into Orb. The GBPVR interface is much much easier to deal with though. The Xbox recognized to Orb server and will send Pics and Mp3's but I am still having problems with video (unrelated to the Xbox serving issue).
But Orb does show that it is possible to integrate into the Xbox interface. What would be cool is GBPVR as an additional frame on the Xbox interface, or fool the Xbox into thinking that it is a MCE PC.

I was recently looking into this again (XBMC as a front-end to GBPVR) and I found that someone wrote a python script for MythTV.
My python skills are pretty weak but hopefully I'll have some time soon to take a look at it and see what I can do. No guarantees though, but I do think it would be nice to have this...

If I was developer that wanted this, and had xbox, I'd implemenent the Hauppauge MVP protocol which would give you the whole GB-PVR UI in as little as 500 lines of code. You could even use mvallevand's mvpmc emulation code as a good example of exactly how to do it.
(I've long since sold my xbox, so it wont be done by me)

The xbmc isn't something I'd be willing to look into supporting either, but I'd certaily work with xbox linux developers as discussed earlier in the thread. My personal goal with mvpmc's plugin architecture is to provide an HD upgrade for the mvp user's first and native h264/avc second when the appropriate, affordable hardware is available. Martin

If anyone gets anywhere on this I'd be interested, the MVP wired version seems to be out of stock everywhere at the moment (uk). Even the wireless version is rare. Meanwhile first gen Xboxes are a dime a dozen on the second hand market.

Keep in mind that no one I know would buy a 360 just for the media sharing capabilities. But it offers the possibility of higher resolutions and better sound and one less box in your living room. Gaming, DVD, Internet, Music, Movie download, MSN Messenger (soon), voice, video chat, etc.
The Orb/Xbox concept is pretty good (though clunky compared to GBPVR) but I still can't get video to work. It is definitely the way of the future. The MVP is great but limited by its hardware.

I havn't played too much with GBPVR client mode.
But it looks to me as if it just connects to the GBPVR DB directly. It doesn't duplicate the interface. That is done by GBPVR on the client PC. Can't a HTPC frontend be programmed in Linux to just connect & interact with the GBPVR DB? Couldn't XBMC be tweaked to work with GBPVR? They both use an SQL DB. |
