I was wondering if anyone has gotten Remote TV to work with External Record, VideoLAN, and a Remote TV application?

I have been trying to figure out a way to get GB-PVR to play a Remote TV MPEG-4 stream from another location over my PVR. For instance, streaming a movie channel from an external location using VideoLAN (MPEG-4 Stream) to a GB-PVR Capture Source using External Recorder and XMLTV (EPG). External Recorder would be configured with something like RemoteTVClient (http://anuragworld.googlepages.com/remotetv) or XBMC Client (http://www.jtvlan.org/), which would accept channel information from the command line. This way each night XMLTV would update with the movie channel information and then when I selected the channel from GB-PVR's TV Guide it would startup the External Recorder with the RemoteTV Client that would contact the VideoLAN MPEG-4 Stream and allow me to view the remote stream. If there was more than one channel in the XMLTV EPG, I could also change channels on the remote capture card through GP-PVR's TV Guide with the RemoteTV Client.

Has anyone been able to get something like this to work? I know Ubustream can do something simular with Internet Streams. Can Ubustream do this with a remote capture card stream (i.e., change channels, etc)?

Your thoughts and comments are appreciated.

Respectfully,

Gary

Firstly, couldn't you use GB-PVR's built in client/server feature to accomplish the same thing? If you had GB-PVR running on the PC with the capture card and then GB-PVR configured as a client running on the "local" PC that would let you use the EPG on the server machine, change channels, etc. This thread has some info about setting this up,

If you don't have access to the remote PC (or can't install GB-PVR on it for some reason) you should be able to use UbuStream's channel mode to watch the RemoteTV streams. Remote TV looks like it's just a very elegant wrapper for VLC (he's figured out all the ugly config details for setting up VLC to use DirectShow for the capture card and provided some dialogs for setting up VLC) so you should be able to point VLC on the client PC to the UDP stream coming from the Remote TV server (udp:\\myremotepc:5800 or something similar). If you can get that working, then you should be able to set up UbuStream stations to use the same URL. For changing channels, you'd have to experiment a bit. I'm guessing Remote TV uses a VLC playlist for the channels, so you'd need to figure out how to start the stream at the right place in the paylist. This thread will give you some good bckground info about how all this works (and even how to do it without needing Remote TV).

The XMLTV piece you''d have to set up separately.. I can't really help you there. At minimum you can use UbuStream's dummy EPG generator which would at least allow you to select the channels from the TV guide.

The GB-PVR client/server solution would certainly be a lot simpler. Smile
