There is a head to head comparison of these two decoders over at Tom's hardware. http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/12/18/a...dissected/

This article also has a good basic primer on MPEG decoders and what they do.

THIEF
you stole my link, I hold a proprietary license to all links to THG and its affiliates on this forum

:p Big Grin I joke I joke, I keed I keed (see Triumph the insult comic dog)

yeah, I posted that in the disappointing MPEG decoding thread, because it basically supports my general belief that ATI is better for PVR use than NVIDIA.

thought about posting it twice, decided against it, so I guess I should thank you for posting it again where it will get more visibility. thanksSmile

I did search around a little before I posted this link but didn't find your post. I am often guilty of being a day llate and a dollar short......Big Grin

I didn't find that reference even though I have been following that thread as I try to improve the playback on my client machine. I am currently using the 30 day trial of the purevideo codec with pretty good results. Since I have a Geforce 6200 card I am probably stuck with buying the purevideo decoder or else settling for no hardware acceleration.

I didnt specifically mention ati or nvidia, or their respective decoders, because the article is more based on their hardware acceleration implementation IMHO

Too bad they didn't review hardware acceleration with HiDef and h.264 content.

Do you guys know if AVIVO is available just as a software CODEC like PureVideo? What I've seen about it on ATI's site is that it's a hardware platform, and I have an aging Radeon 9200 card. I've been using PureVideo and have not been too satisifed, so I'd love a chance to try an ATI product instead.

as far as i get it AVIVO is only working with ATI cards & is included with their catalyst drivers (not sure if radeon 9000 are supported, for sure only about radeon X1300 & above)

Does anyone have a copy of the article in a cache or saved somewhere?

Following the link - it now says "Story Removed"

Cheers

AVIVO has similiar terminology to Purevideo, in that's an 'umbrella' term covering ATI video features.

There are 2 clearly defined subsets of AVIVO:
1) Video feature set on ATI video cards
2) AVIVO video converter application

The AVIVO video converter application includes MUX/DEMUX codecs, but the application has a licence restriction that it will only run on PC's containing an X1000 series video card. The codecs are standard DirectShow codecs, therefore GBPVR can use them. There was a lot of speculation that the converter uses transcoding hardware acceleration from the X1x00 card but this is appearantly untrue. Appearatly there is a hacked version on the AVIVO converter application around with the licence restriction removed. The AVIVO converter is a very fast transcoder, but the resulting video quality is debateable.
