I have been playing with VideoLan for the last couple of days and it is fun. Especially as i can stream from my desktop to my laptop and connect the laptop to the tv. You can stream files, dvd, etc.

One limitation of videolan at present is it cannot stream live-tv on a windows platform.

This concept may not fit into the GB-PVR roadmap but i'm curious to see what others think about this. I'm not sure what the benefits would be but i do like the idea of being able to stream live tv, dvd, mpeg, etc.

Cheers,

Isn't that what the MediaMVP does? Or does it just stream files not live TV.

I'm a bit backward on the advantages of Live TV - I don't tend to watch much live anyway, but it would seem to me that if you have a TV with an integrated tuner, why wouldn't you just watch it through that - I know the philosophical benefits (pause live TV, rewind, skip adverts, etc.) but does anyone get value out of that? Must be my techno-luddite feelings coming out again...

I'm not sure about mediamvp. I guess someone with a mediamvp box could enlighten us as to all its features. I have read somewhere it has a wireless network connection built in but i don't see anything on the hauppauge pages to confirm this.

I can see the benefits of pausing live tv, etc. if its the main viewing point. Ie. if you have a pvr connected up to your television you'll use a lot of those features because they are there and easy to use.

But i also agree that a lot of these things benefit from the WOW factor, used for a while then never bothered with.

So far i have not really thought of any benefits streaming would add as a core feature of GB-PVR. Might be a nice coding exercise for a plugin/component.

I would be pushing for streaming live TV especially with the MediaMVP. I'll try to explain why. I'm building a new house that could end up with 10 or more TV locations. I want to use Satelite TV, either Directv or Dish Network, but I would not and could have 10 or more sat boxes. Even though there are 10 locations, there will be no more than 2 or 3 live shows being watched at the same time. I would like to have a audio/video PC server. It would have 4 sat rcvrs connected to 4 PVR-250 cards as video inputs. It would have large disk storage to store recorded shows and ripped CDs. A program like GB-PVR would be the recording, storing and distribution server. Then in each TV/Stereo location there would be a MediaMVP player that could perform a number of functions. It could play MP3s, play recorded TV shows, display still digital photos, display live TV, setup TV recordings, ... all with the same UI. At least this is my plan right now. To make it work I will need a program like GB-PVR that has a full client for the MediaMVP. I think that is what GB-PVR is working toward.

Colin,
You talked about wireless MediaMVPs. The MediaMVP is not wireless. You might be able to put a wireless bridge in front of it. If you had to have wireless, there is a box called PrismIQ that is wireless, but it costs about 3X the MediaMVP. You really can't beat the MediaMVP for the price. $80.00 US on sale.

Hey Bryan,

cheers for the info on mediaMVP. I was just curious to see if they put a wireless connection on it because there was one site selling it with this listed on it. Can't remember what site though.

Good luck with your setup - sounds interesting,

Colin.

It sounds very impressive... but with gbpvr currently you would only be able to watch the same live TV or video stream - you'd want to be able to individually address each MVP wouldn't you? (may be worth posting to the wish list!Wink

Andy,
Your right. I was wondering about that too. No one that I know of actually has a MVP client available that claims to do Live TV. SUB is the closest that I've found. Hopefully, he can make GB-PVR support multiple MVPs with up to 4 independent live streams.

Four independent live streams would mean four Directv or Dish Network sat boxes plugged into four PVR250s.

As I've only got one PVR card, I can only confirm it works for one instance but I suspect it'll be easy to get it going for more than one. One step at a time...
