OK, until I built this setup I never even had a TV that would DISPLAY closed-captions. Smile

So now, while I can be playing a DVD or video_ts in the video library and make subtitles turn on and off, whether watching live TV through GBPVR or recordings, I don't have options for closed-captions when I move the mouse or use the buttons (yellow or others) on the remote.

My setup is 0.99.5, the PVR-350, output is through the VGA-out of a MX-440 to the VGA-in on my LCD TV. I usually have Intervideo and VMR9-custom in use, but I've just tried with VMR9 (with no change) as -custom isn't listed in the config panel checkbox for closed captions. I really haven't messed with captions before so I don't know if it worked in earlier versions.

When I'm using the TV's tuner etc. captioning is on CC1.

I just went through the WinTV2000 settings; enabling "annunciators" and choosing a font, I still don't get anything displayed for closed captions when "playing local". I don't have a TV on the coax output from the 350 to test whether captions perhaps only work via the coax? but from what I've read about the 350 i"d expect no overlaid graphics via coax out of any sort.

I'd like to record a particular couple of shows for my father and cc enabled would help. (there is also a prefs item I was also looking for-- at recording time, being able to set captions for a given recording event).

Thanks for help;

There is no real closed caption support in GB-PVR. Some PVR250 and PVR350 owners have had it just magically working by using VMR9 with the Intervideo decoder, but this also relies on the cpature card device automatically embedding the closed captions in the recorded MPG file. It would only work on playback of previously recorded files, not live tv, and there is no way to toggle it on or off.

This doesnt use the TV's CC abilities though, but the Intervideo decoder's ability to pass the subpicture to the Microsoft CC decoder, which then mixes them with the video.

OK. thanks. Out of curiosity, how impossible would this support be to add?

So, then people are talking about subtitles then, it must all be DVD playback?

I won't spend a huge amount ot time trying to make something happen with this, then.

Its not very likely, mainly because I'm not in a country that uses the US closed caption system, making it very difficult to develop and test. Maybe one day, but its very low in my priorities.

If I'd received closed caption broadcasts here, then I probably would have added this by now. Anyone want to send me a NTSC VCR and a box of video taped shows with CC, for me to chip away at it on a rainy day when I've got nothing else to do?

In addition to DVD subtitles, it also supports teletext subtitles and DVB subtitles which are the types of subtitles used by the rest of world.

hmm.. OK, I'm not getting anything with VMR9 and I am only using Intervideo, and to my understanding from the above turning subtitles OFF (or ON) in config then should not be DISabling them, if they are present they'll always show no matter what?

How/where would I check on Intervideo settings and the MSoft CCdecoder presence/operation?

I thought I had them displaying at one point in WinTV though, when I first got the card and was playing around (coax out plus regular monitor on VGA-out from mainboard). But perhaps not.

What could I record and send you (snail mail even) so that if you want to play with the signal, you had something available?

Assuming you've not managed to turn off the ability to record CC info somehow, then making the graph below in graphedit should show then.

Toomanyhandles, I have a PVR-350 specifically for the purpose of showing CC on recorded shows. I used the http://gbpvr.com/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Utili...eTweakTool and Intervideo and VMR9 and I have CC. Let me know if I can help.

Thanks for the info! and for the diagram Sub. I am travelling this week, if I can VNC into the thing during the evening with reasonable throughput I'll try changing some things remotely and see how it looks.

Since a main reason for me to figure out cc is to make DVDs that my father can play back with the titles, I guess I should ask if that has a chance of working. He could also play back the mp4's with VLC on his 10.4 Mac if need be.

Comments welcome, it might be a bit before I can test though.

I appreciate the help, thanks.

I assume it can be done. There are reasons for me to assume this. Which I might be able to test later. But, if worst comes to worst you can use a program called mpg2srt which strips the subs into an srt file. Do a google on it. There are a lot of threads on mpg2srt. A guy named merrypig made it for Snapstream with PVR-250/350 cards. Once you have the srt file there are multiple options for playback.

See comments in previous post.

Sub, my eyes are glossing over...

Is the signal recorded into MPEG (NTSC) encoded with CC and all we need is a decoder plugin or something...?

Or do we need to capture the CC before it gets recorded?
