One of the things that might be a problem for GB-PVR users as mvpmc progresses, is that many of the potential hardware candidates for replacing the MediaMVP offer improved video and audio potential but at the same time they don't provide the same choice for on screen menu colour display. Typically there are many palettes but only 256 colours available at one time.

This will certainly mean some changes for displaying jpeg image but there are solutions for this in the Hauppauge protocol itself What I don't now is how this will affect the overall GBPVR solution. The simplistic displays of most home DVD and CD players are probably a good idea of what to expect.

I am therefore looking for any feedback on this that you can give. ie does this sound like a show stopper? does it affect a lot of plugin?

Also if anyone knows of a 256 colour skin let me know, I'd be interested in looking at it too.

Thanks,

Martin

as long as it's only for the menus,shouldn't be a show-stopper i wouldn't think..
skins could easily be converted but it would be best if it didn't require any user mods..
and as long as you could still read the menus...Smile dithering might affect that severly, tho nearest color shouldn't as much..
also, what about the overlays? osd..

one would think the other devices would eventually support higher colors as well..even 16bit would be fine..

also, do you mean that using gbpvr would be affected as well as any other native usage of shares? can't they be handled separately?

generally not a good idea to go backwards in capability as new hardware will almost certainly be more capable, not less as these are in this fledgling market..
and with video display options really ramping up the quality, 256 color on a HD system would be quite a contrast..

that said, as long as it's not totally ugly,[since you can use multiple pallettes which should help alot] i'm sure most people wouldn't mind that much..

so you mean you'll port mvpmc to other hardware devices? too cool.
Hardware: HDHR Prime, HDPVR 1212, Raspberry pi2, VFD display w/LCDSmartie

That's good to hear

Great question, and it really depends on the hardware and the project's knowledge of it.

I think cost has typically been the concern.

Emulation mode will be the most affected. For native modes we are planning on making it easier to have better screen designs, but we don't have the same high water mark as gbpvr. The Hauppauge server will probably look just fine too.

Well they are pretty much all based on a Sigma Designs family and I've never seen any I interfaces liked. I know that gbpvr supported the xcard, but I've never found a screen capture of what the output looked

Jon has already go most of the osd on the Mediagate MG35 figured out as well the remote, and I can compile for it. My shorter term goal is to get emulation mode working well enough to make the port worthwhile.

Flawless video - crappy menus and OSD.

That's what I figured. From the mvpmc side I'm hoping we can load a full colour jpeg via YUV using local storage and just overlay the OSD changes, in an manner similar to the Hauppauge OSD.BIN logic, the logic that left Hauppauge OSD on the screen with some of their dongles last year.

There are already some advanced vnc options in mvpmc that would make this very efficient for a GBPVR too.
