I have been searching and searching. So if I missed the answer. Please reply with a link to the right thread. Also I hope I am in the right section for this thread.

I just installed the latest GB PVR version v0.99.12, on XP SP2 non MCE, AC3filter 1.11 , CCCP codec pack 2.22.2007, Quicktime 7.1.x, WMP 11.

I just installed GBPVR yesterday. And it plays my AC3 videos fine. But quicktim movies do not play.

But even for non Quicktime movies, I would like to be able to use Windows Media Player 11 for all my videos. Especially all NON-quicktime videos. I really like the interface and settings for my setup. If I could quickly have .mov files play with Quicktime from within GBPVR and then ALL other videos play using WMP11 from within GBPVR, that would rock.

But I would at least like to get WMP11 as the player for my video files, even if I have to use it for Quicktime movies as well.

Is this even possible with GBPVR? Or do I have to use the GBPVR internal player only? Or am I missing how GBPVR really works?

Thanks.

Personally WMP is not versitaile enough and is too restrictive......

A lot of people, including myslef, opt for the open source VLC player which plays about anything, uses less resources and provides built in features such as the ability to transcode from one format to another or to stream a video that is in one format to a new format......

I would recommend you checking it out......

I have used VLC and I don't care for it. I don't know what you mean by WMP11 being restrictive. I can play every file I have thrown at it. Including FLV youtube saved videos. It's clean, and I really prefer the popup bottom navigation layout and gui. I really don't need any suggestions on other players.

What I do need though, is a useful suggestion to my question, which is if I can setup a default external player for GBPVR to use instead of what it's using by default from install.

Are you saying that you can personally have used VLC from within GB PVR? If so, I am sure I can use that same setup with WMP. Could you share?

EDIT: Also, I use other tools than VLC for my transcoding... which I do very little of. I mostly just watch videos. I also use a different app for music and photos because GB PVR is no good with photos and super slow at it. Acdsee and Faststone are much better for videos. And I also prefer WinAMP and WMP for music. If I could setup an external photo and audio player, that would be cool too. But I mostly want to use GB PVR for Videos, TV and recording TV with my dual tuner.

Nope....in actuallity I only use GBPVR for recording....I do all my viewing via a remote MVP or use the Web Interface (EWA) to GBPVR for streaming and managing recordings and schedules.

Sorry my suggestion wasn't helpful.

WMP vs. VLC is a personal preference.....but VLC still offers far more functionality than WMP Wink

GB-PVR only supports it's own internal player (which under the hood uses the same directshow components as WMP). It doesnt call external media player apps.

You should be able to play Quicktime .mov files in GB-PVR if you have the QuickTime Alternative filters installed: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Quic...native.htm

You mentioned you use VLC... do you use VLC within GB PVR?

I agree, VLC has more features when it comes to non "watching playback" functionality. But I saw no improvement using VLC for fullscreen playback and WMP11 has a better mouse popup navigation gui.

My system is a 2GB ram , dual HDD, dual tuner computer hooked up to 7.1 DTS via digital Coax SPDIF and a 1280x720p DLP projector to my DIY 100" screen. So I don't do any streaming... well that's not true. My main desktop has more HDD storage, so most of the newer content is on that system and it's streamed to WMP11 via 54g wireless. Which also included 720 WMVHD, Divx, and 720 qucktime videos. All work fine. Sometime the 720p quicktime has a little "shifting" near the top... but rarely notice it.

So I guess I do streaming audio and video as well.... but I still just use mostly WMP11.

No, he means that he can use VLC on a remote machine (or local I guess) to watch streams from the GB-PVR web server.

Its not used by GB-PVR in the way you're meaning.

This is 100% the answer. Not what I was hoping to hear... but it's 100% a full answer.

So I will setup the Quicktime Alternative so that WMP can play quicktime movies. Which means GBPVR will also play them via the same DirectShow components.

Main reason I want to use WMP11 is for the fullscreen popup navigation/timeline gui since I use a mouse pointer a lot. But I will just setup my MCE remote instead.

I agree that VLC versus WMP is a personal thing but I do like the no Mpeg decoder required feature of VLC for playing DVD's.

Course I'm also on wmp9 on my win2k boxes which isn't as nice as wmp11 which my kids use on their XP machines.

The developer for Gamezone has said his next release at the end of the month will support windows apps and games. It's possible that could be coaxed into using wmp to play your recordings.

I actually like media player classic myself coupled with ffdshow or Mplayer.

I found a simple python based HTPC front end that will browse your video file locations & launch the video with whatever external player you want.

It's limited to media playback & game emulators, but nice on older systems without directx hardware.

But really, 1 ghz PC is just fine for SDTV playback with GBPVR.
The menus can just be a little sluggish.
