Reboot after so many recordings...

I was trying to be thorough and I haven't seen anyone else state this so here we go. I need to reboot my system for optimal performance after typically 15 recordings. Although I could set up under scheduled events to reboot after so many days, it would be much more efficient for so many recordings. For instance, today I recorded 12 shows vs. tomorrow I will only record one.

well sub, you're no friend of batches, but that's the way to go to achive something like that ;-)

a stupid thing like check in postprocessing.bat if a file %programfiles%\devnz\gbpvr\count1.txt exists (if so delete it & create %programfiles%\devnz\gbpvr\count2.txt) & so on till you get to %programfiles%\devnz\gbpvr\count15.txt, if that exists, reset "counter" & reboot (you might want to check for pending/current recordings with mr. slims GBPVRCLI)

I was toying with adding this as a module/option to my StartGBPVR program (wiki entry here) as I too prefer to restart GBPVR after an evening's use, and reboot every two to three days.

The main trouble would be determining when a safe time to do it would be. Normally, I'd do it at 0800, since there's no chance of my either watching or recording anything at that time of day.

I've seen someone doing it after epg-update. I think you can use PostUpdateEPG.bat for that.

I think it would be funny to make a collection of all of Sub's definitive answers. I much prefer this over the weeks of arguing over a font or the color of a title bar on some open source projects I follow.

The buck stops at Sub. Even when he shoots you down, at least we can all move on to the next thing and get on with our lives.

No offense to Cahill84 and his suggestion. I need to reboot my machine daily also. But it's the front end that's unstable. The recording service is rock solid reliable. I have never lost a recording due to the recording service crashing. When the front end gets funky I just shut it down and restart it with the remote. Takes 30 seconds - no biggie.

I too would like to reboot my machine occasionally.
is there something that would detect if there is a current (or withing the next 30 mins) recording, if anything is transcoding, and if anyone was watching a show??
(and maybe is anyone is connected to the website (recording mule is also web server))

The only time I ever have to boot my win2k system is when MS insists on it to install a security update. I run my system at 100% CPU 24/7 with folding@home and GBPVR 99.12 running. That sounds like maybe some software is unstable on your machine.

Sadly, I've found that, across numerous machines and setups, XP does perform better if you reboot it a least once a week - if not more often. To guarantee reliability (which with a real-time app like a GPVR-powered media PC is essential), rebooting every two/three days makes sense. If only GBPVR ran on Linux <sigh>.

So some form of regular rebooting is useful. As I said, I just use the Windows scheduler to reboot at 0800 every three days or so. Works for me...

Yeah, I would agree, I would be hesitant to say that it's an unstable program. It's not that I'm having massive crashes, but stuff just starts lagging and responding differently. I'm fairly meticulus in watching it's performance. Sometimes I will have typed all my papers at the school's library, so my system is only using Gb-pvr. After three-four days of going into and out of sleep mode it will be slow to open gb-pvr when I finally get a chance to watch the files. Furthermore, the program has problems opening. For instance, the scrolling recording updates in the middle of the start-up screen won't load- saying that I have no recordings pending. Or, the program will open, but it won't let you click on any of the buttons. All I have to do is give it a good reboot and boom, it's back to working. I'm not experiencing any other problems beyond that though. I was just looking for a way to automate it. I guess I'll talk to my dad and see if he can help me write a batch file. To take that stuff into effect.
