I know its impossible to play HD on the MVP without transcoding. however right now my PC wont keep up with the "on the fly" transcoding for more than a minute or so. the alternatives as far as i know are to increase priority of the ffmpeg process (currently not doable from config.xml but i put in a request) OR to convert finished recordings and then play them.

i'm using the ATI codecs to capture MPEG directly from my BDA card (HVR 950). it dumps 720p or 1080i and i was wondering if there's a way to set the codec up to dump 480i instead of HD while recording the scheduled program as a way of avoiding the later transcoding. i'm aware that my CPU might not be able to record and transcode at the same time but i'd like to try it first if thats possible.

any suggestions are appreciated.Smile

I dont think increasing the priority is going to help. That wont speed up anything, it just mean its less likely to get interrupted by other activities like surfing the web etc. If your machine cant keep up when its doing nothing else, then increasing the priority wont help.

Sorry, with digital devices you just get whatever resolution the show was transmitted in.

Currently you need about 16 cores for on the fly HD transcoding Big Grin

Nice! probably pretty close. I capture some shows HD via firewire and convert to WMV (Xbox 360 playback) or DVD format. At default settings it takes up to a day on my 2.8 P4. I can trim it down to about 8hrs or so and still not see the difference.
3x MVPs (not used anymore)
XBMC
Hauppauge 150 via SVideo
Comcast Digital Cable
Motorola HD Cable box channel changed via Firewire
Vista Home Premium with RDP hack
AMD Athalon 64 5000+
340gig sata, plus 80SATA+3x160IDE Drives in XP machine for storage.

If you want to go real HDTV you'll have to invest into Dlink MediaLounge with HDTV HDMI. That's where I going next or just stick with the Digital Cable Box with DVR and HDTV. As my area will not support HDTV directly so I could use HVR-1600... I am just too from major cities to use ANT on the ROOF which I wouldn't do anyway..

I can capture UHD, DiscoveryHD,MOJO and most HD shows on the 4 networks. More than just trailers. All audio works fine. Some shows are over 11gig/hr. Converting the HD transport streams down to 720x480mpeg2 in dvd format results in a purchased DVD quality. Or I can convert it to WMV in the native resolution of the original show (1280x720 progressive or 1920x1080 interlaced) and play it from a USB drive on my xbox 360 and not be able to tell the difference from the original HD show. But if I convert to mpeg, I use the great util MpegImport and then watch it on the MVP and it looks like a DVD. But like I said before, no where near realtime. If it is a 9pm show, you can watch it at 10pm (the next day)
