Output format of HVR-1600, digital side?

I'm trying to decide whether to build an HTPC or buy a new media server, but one of the factors I'm not sure about is the digital side of my HVR-1600 tuner cards. GBPVR doesn't support the QAM digital half yet, and I can't get the WinTV applications to record any digital stations. So I don't know what kind of file format I'm going to end up with.

Will it be a higher bitrate MPEG2, a TS transport stream, or a H.264 stream? Or will it vary from one channel to another?

I'll be using QAM with my unencoded digital TV stations.

Can anyone give me some insight as to what kind of files I can expect out of the HVR-1600?

For atsc channels most users users are having best success with the dvr-ms mux, which ends up recording a file with the .dvr-ms extension. As i understand it, dvr-ms files are basically mpeg2 files (but with microsoft's drm wrapped into them?). If you are recording digital ntsc source (i.e. not high def), I think some have had success with a cyberlink decoder which allows them to record directly to mpeg2 format.

I am not using qam, but I think if you search the board you will find some discussion of 1600's with and without qam capability.
