In client mode I would like to be able to choose streaming for live TV play and file sharing for recordings playback.
This is mainly because I can only get live TV playing via streaming and I can only get recordings playing back using file sharing.
This is currently a show stopper for me and gbpvr, being able to choose playback options of live TV and recording options independently would be a solution.

I agree here. There needs to be a button like Aspect Ratio that will allow you to toggle between streaming and file sharing. Or the live tv needs to work better with file sharing.

Sounds good, but the programming effort required to do that might not be trivial.

On my system, Live TV and Recordings work fine no matter whether I chose streaming or file sharing - I don't know why - but there it is. Anyway it shows that it works. It might be worthwhile having a go at the original problem again.

IMHO it's always better to cure the disease rather that treat the symptoms.

cmon whats wrong with the ambo at the bottom of the cliff

i would say it comes down to some hardware just cant handle it
well that and you probably know more about how the network actually works so know how to get it workin without even thinkin about it
i can get them all working apart from the file sharing live tv thats just jumpy as

Absolutely nothing - I've always worked on the 'one step up, two steps down' principal... Smile

Of course - but that's always a great reason to upgrade something... Wink

I've got a list of network related diseases in my ToCure list longer than your arm, so probably not :o

I don't yet know enough about why my system works but, if you think that comparing some system/setup details would help then lets go - but remember I've only been using gbpvr for a couple of months...

I'm writing here mostly just to bump the thread, but I also want to see if we can figure out how to fix the problem and not just address the symptoms.

So first, you would think that it could be a network issue. My client PC is running Wifi so it is probably not a stretch of the imagination. However, this does not explain why the recorded shows work fine on file sharing (btw, it also works fine on streaming, just that the ff and rew is delayed).

Which means what is the problem?

My guess is that the issue has to do with the fact that the client PC is trying to access the time shift buffer file at the same time that the server is attempting to write to it. As anyone who has ever tried to delete a file that is already in use knows, this is a bit of a problem for windows. My guess is that the streaming allows you to do both file read and write on the same IO stream since it is all being handled by the server's gbpvr program, thus getting around the problem.

Unfortunately the way I see it, there is really no easy solution to this problem since it is how windows inherently handles file access. However I think implementing that button would not be too difficult. Of course you would not be able to toggle between modes while a show was running, however as long as a show isn't running it should not be too hard to change the program to handle the video via file sharing or streaming. You could put a OSD somewhere on gbpvr to tell you which format you are using.

Another option, since it seems fairly universal that recordings work best with file sharing and live tv works best with streaming, why not just set it up so that each component uses what works best for it. You could separate it in the config file so that instead of just being able to choose streaming or file sharing, you could choose it for both recordings and live tv.

Just some thoughts. What do other people think? Lets keep this thread alive so that sub can take a look at it and see what he thinks when he gets back from vaca.

To be honest, there is probably zero chance I'll provide the ability to dynamically betweek streaming and file sharing mode. There is a some issues relating to client/server mode that I do intend to fix though, which should improve the performance.

I can understand why you would not want to switch dynamically (by this I assume you mean during playback). Still think seperate stream/fileshare config settings for Live TV and Recordings playback should be realistic.
