Hey guys, I'm looking to upgrade by gbpvr server, but I want to only upgrade the motherboard and processor. I'd like to keep the other components I already have. I've looked at some of the newer boards and processors and they seem to be reasonably priced, but then I'd have to get new ram, video, etc.

Here's the components that I have and would like to keep:

1 gig SDRAM (2700)
120 gig WD HDD EIDE
2 x Hauppauge PVR150
ATI Radeon 9550 AGP

I'd really like to have digital audio out onboard and additional pci slots are also a plus. I'm definitely not against buying used (Ebay or otherwise) and don't have a preference between AMD and Intel. I would like the new set up to be able to playback HD content.

Any help in finding a good fit is greatly appreciated.

Any of the higher end new style boards will have a PCI-X 16 slot for video not AGP. There will be a few AGP boards, but they are getting harder and harder to find. Video Cards have come down in price lately now that the 8800's and other new card debuted a few months ago. If your looking to go HD, might want a new video card as well. Will a 9550 push HD content?

Personally... for me it would be an easy choice. I am an AMD guy and have been for years. Please note that it doesn't mean I am a "Intel bashing fanboy". Big Grin With that out of the way...

AMD's Athlon 64 X2's are dropping in price: Athlon 64 X2 Some even have motherboard combo's right now, not sure if they have what you want (the boards in the combo) but if so it could save some money. Downside... you will need new ram. The newer/higher performance X2's all use DDR2... which has also gotten pretty cheap lately.

this core2duo mobo will let you use DDR or DDR2 memory as well as AGP or PCI-X graphics cards. It also has 4 x PCI slots

but honestly, with DDR2 RAM so cheap atm, I wouldn't try too hard to hang onto your old stuff.

Re: AMD, this mobo has a built in graphics chipset that apparently handles HD video and has a HDMI output for connection to a plasma/lcd tv.
