Thought it was about time again for a thread on wake from S3 standby problems(Sorry Sub!)!

I've done some extensive testing on both 99.12 & 1.0.8 and in both case have had to return to 99.05 because of standby problems. Specifically the PC not always waking to record on the latter versions. There seems to be little pattern other than a proportion of recordings not happening.

I've used GB-PVR since 2003 on various PCs and my current XP SP2 build has worked flawlessly on versions up to and including 99.5. But I see wake from standby problems on the same PC when:
- upgrading to 99.12 or 1.0.8
- uninstall 99.05 & install of 99.12 or 1.0.8
- fresh format/install of XP SP2 & 99.12 or 1.0.8.

I can also downgrade back to 99.05 and problems go away again.

It also does not seem to matter (though I'm still doublechecking) if recordings are made via GUI or Web or if going into standby is manual or timed.

This all confuses me as essentially the only variable is the GBPVR version. There are no logs as of course the machine is not on when the problem occurs! (other than of course the failed recordings when the machine is manually woken afterwards). All the other threads on this type of problem always point to hardware/BIOS but that can't be the case here with <=99.05 (and other windows tasks) working fine. Also GB-PVR I believe only tells Windows when it wants the PC to wake up and I would guess that this is no much code and also has changed little, if at all, between versions.

I'm happy to stay on 99.05 for now and will try the again the next version that comes after 1.0.8.

I can only think it is a quirk of my system so I'm interested to know if anybody else is seeing this as well.

thanks
Simon

My PC will wake from hibernate to record, but not wake for EPG update. There does seem to be a lot of threads about wake problems! A usefull free tool for testing is sleeper from http://www.passmark.com/products/sleeper.htm
This tool confirms what sleep states are available on your PC and then tests them all - in configuration you can say how many repetitions it does.
However it did'nt really help me as S1 and S4 both worked fine with over 100 repetitions, so still no idea why gbpvr will not wake PC to update EPGSad
I suspect my crappy PCCHIPS motherboard, but could also be my own annoying habit of disabling any services I don't think are needed and then forgetting what I didSmile

I find the log files confusing because of the date format. Here is an extract from GBPVRrecordingservice.exe.log:

2007-07-30 08:29:42.531 VERBOSE [12] Hour is currently 20. Conversions will happen between 18:00 and 19:00
2007-07-30 09:00:42.531 VERBOSE [12] Hour is currently 21. Conversions will happen between 18:00 and 19:00
and here from gbpvr.exe-native.log
2007-07-30 20:30:49.984 VERBOSE DirectShowPlayerBase:Confusedtop
2007-07-30 20:30:49.984 VERBOSE DirectShowPlayerBase:Confusedtop finished

I turned the PC on for the fist time today just before 8.30pm - strange one log says 08.29 and another 20.30! Could it be that simple as to why PC did not turn on at 6pm?

This was a bug in the 99.x versions whereby it did not use the same time format for all logs. This has now been fixed in 1.x versions.

I've done some more testing on the problem in my original post and seemed to have a workaround by adjusting the # minutes that Windows waits for standby in its power management. i.e.:

- 3 minutes. Original problem, does not always wake for recordings.
- 5 minutes. Fixed (hopefully), has not missed a recording so far in over 20 tests.

Still don't know if this is just a quirk of my PC or something in post v99.05 GB-PVR. Will do some more testing if I get time.

Have you actually checked if the machine wakes correctly but then goes back to sleep before the recording starts?

Is it possible that gbpvr is waking more than 3 minutes before the recording?
This would explain it and would also explain why setting the sleep timer to 5 mins fixes the issue.
