The reason I ask is my server is slow, and noisy. My client is a notebook, more recent and faster (than my Server). My recent transcodes using Zprocess on the server failed due to lack of speed, so I was wondering if they might work over the MVP using my faster client?

If yes, how do I do this?? If I set autoservers in the client to 1, and 0 on the server, (and share my mvpmc on the client) the MVP should boot via the client right?

Or is this just all pie in the sky?

your server has the files
your client uses the the database and files from the server
how is the mvp going to get the information any faster when it has to go through another link to get the files you want to play

Perhaps due to the fact that his Client machine has more CPU-power to do the transcode?

Exactly. Sorry if I didn't make it clear stu, but the server serves up mpg's no problems to the MVP. However the server cannot transcode Xvids /mp4's/avi's fast enough to send out the resulting mpgs, so the transcoding process stops.

This is perfectly possible (provided the network bandwith allows it). I had the same thing over a wireless network which stumbled over the bandwith. I now connect to the server over a wireless connection and the MVP is on a direct link to the client PC. On the client PC there is a little tool which delivers the MVP and IP address. The only bottleneck in this is that the MVPserver will look for active network connections on startup which for some reason builds up slower than the starting of the MVPserver itself so I had to start the MVPserver using a batchfile with a delay.

If you did that you'd have to be careful not to overload your wireless network as I talked about here.

Koenie, that is exactly what I had in mind.
Martin, your note about network is timely. If push comes to shove, I'll run a CAT5 or CAT6 cable... Server to client...

My setup is as follows...

Slow, practically silent, PC under the TV. It's an Epia 5000 board and when I say slow I mean dead slow - it's like equivalent of 350mhz! But, despite that, it can record TV, do the TV web server duties, route my internet connection (via internet connection sharing) all at the same time; no problem. This machine I leave on permanently.

My two MVP's connect, not to the PC under the TV, but the much faster PC in the office (a 2.8Ghz dual core). This PC accesses the hard disk on the slow PC and then can transcode to the MVPs. It also is where all of my music, pictures and most video is stored.

Basically, I have the same version of GB-PVR running on both of the machines. I set up all the EPG stuff on the slow machine and set the fast machine in client mode. The fast machine auto-starts two MVP servers and the slow machine none.

I had some trouble accessing the shared drive from the MVP via the fast machine but this is now resolved through the help of people on this forum.

If you need any specific details just let me know.

Cheers,

Steve
GB-PVR 1.0.16 (recording service and database) running on: VIA EPIA 5000 (533Mhz), 512MB, 40GB HD, PVR-150MCE, USB-UIRT controlling Sky Digital box.

GB-PVR 1.3.11 (front-end and client for above) running on: Toshiba NB100 netbook 1.6Ghz, 160GB HD, 1GB RAM.

Front-end viewed on 2xMVPs (using mvpmc dongle).

What he said. Thank you all guys, there are some great ideas coming out of here, which gives us all some more options.

Cheers, much to chew on.
