Anyone using GB-PVR and the MediaMVP over a wireless bridge? Since I started using GB-PVR I have been looking at getting an MVP just because it looks cool, but my wife has insisted "NO MORE WIRES". I was thinking of combining the MVP and GB-PVR with a bridge, but would 802.11b be enough, or do I have to spring for the 802.11g hardware?

No, haven't tried it but:
Theoretically 802.11b should work, however the advertised rate of 11Mbs is rarely achieved. If the signal is not perfect, if the distance is more than 10m, there are intervening walls etc... all these will drop the rate, often to less than that required for smooth playback. Also RF interference from cordless telephones etc degrade the rate.

I've heard from MythTV users that 802.11g works ok. Same story: you never get 54Mbs but you do get enough even at half rate!

Oh, by the way, if you use directional antennae you can usually get *much* better data rates, even with 802.11b.

802.11b doesn't work for me. It's fine for music, but video playback is just too choppy. Others seem to have had luck with faster speeds, the forums Here have a few threads with people discussing their wireless setups.

I do have GB-PVR running on wireless-B without any problems. There are a few things that you have to watch out for:

1. Reduce the recording and livetv quality settings to 3,500 bps.
2. I have encryption turned off.
3. Relative short distance and good signal strength. My signal strength is around 50%.
4. Microwave ovens can mess it up.

Hauppauge is suppose to introduce a new wireless MVP soon. You might want to wait for it.

I tried it over 802.11b, video wouldn't play back. It seems tha the default settings for medium quality take ~6Mb to play back, thats just over the actual speed you'll see from an AP. You could try 802.11g, but be sure you don't have any 802.11b devices associated with the same AP, although G is backwards compatable with B, the penalty you pay is that any G devices will fallback to B speeds when you associate a B client.

Best bet, go with 802.11a.

I have video working on an 802.11g network with encryption (WPA) on. Using a d-link bridge and a belkin router. Seems to be working, course I have not had a movie going for > 10 min yet.

I can also claim that I am using MediaMVP over a wireless network 802.11g with WEP encryption. MPEG 1/MPEG 2 plays well. I have a Belkin router connected to my broadband cable box. The MediaMVP is connected to the router by RJ45 cable (as it's closeby). The computer is in another room and communicates with the router wirelessly.

After further testing, watched a full movie, no issues.... looked good.
