I was just wondering how you record .ts files using gbpvr??
I would like to know because i know they are the best quality files.

I tried to do it by changing the bda multiplexer to ts mux and it records everything to .ts files now.

I don't know if I did it right though

Any help would be appreciated Smile

When it comes to these digital recordings, the video and audio quality are exactly the same, and will result in the exact same picture during playback. The only way the .ts files are better is that they have the original timing info from the broadcast, usually this is not an issue though.

.ts files come with several limitations though. For example, you cant watch recordings while they're in progress, and you need to install additional directshow components to play this type of file.

That is the right way of doing it.

That limitation must only be in GBPVR. I use this all the time to record ts files which I watch "almost live" with VLC, with mvpmc in native mode at SD, and with my new PCH media extender at 1080i.

Also, not a limitation as such, but in my experience you're looking at maybe 100MB/min so lots of disk space is needed if you do this all the time and don't delete the recordings on a regular basis. Not a major issue these days with the price per GB of drives but not a suitable option for everyone.

Cheers,
Brian

That's true for HD MPEG but the slight head overhead using MPEG-TS instead of MPEG-PS won't make a difference. Also for the all the digital SD I receive, it is a stored at a much lower bit rate than analog but with higher quality video and audo.

The lucky people are those that receive their HD in MPEG-TS x264.

what's that mean? i'm very interested in how/why players can access in progress recordings...is it just the file access? or demux? or file ownership?

I did a quick search, but couldnt find it.
what additional components would I need??

sound/video timing is a problem on a couple of my channels and I would like to try this out.

I will let sub address what the limitation is.

Yeah sure, these are GB-PVR limitations, but I still thought he'd want to know about them given he is running GB-PVR. Transport stream files just havnt been the focus of this projects. All the analog devices produce program stream files, and the vast majority of digital users also want program stream files, so this has been my primary focus.

Its likely I'll start focusing more effort on transport streams now that NZ is starting broadcasts of its HD H.264 transmissions, so hopefully some of these limitations will be removed in the near future. GB-PVR records these types of channels into transport streams files.
