could it be done with something like this?

Could GBPVR support it?

I really want an all-GBPVR setup. Can I capture HDMI out of the STB (which decrypts the QAM) then record w/ GBPVR?

No wouldnt work with GB-PVR.

Sorry but even if GB-PVR did support this device it wouldnt give you what you want. This device cannot record HDCP copy protected content like you'd get from STB.

This device is really intended for professional video production facilities, rather than home theatre setups.

so then, I assume, there has been no proven method for stripping HDCP. Or we would all be talking about it.

Not being able to access my HD content from the STB is disappointing. I really hope the future holds a solution to this dilemma. I suppose my computer probably can't handle the data rate to capture anyway.

Oh well, having something to look forward to is what keeps all of this fun.

I'm guessing the very near future will hold a solution, maybe not as perfect a solution as some might be hoping for, but good enough...

I would prefer a solution that doesn't use words like "DRM" or "subscription" or "licensing"

I don't know any thing for sure, but is there any hard info on wither or not most cable co / satellite stb's actually use hdcp, just because its hdmi doesn't mean that it hdcp is being used. I do know that the first generation of Motorola cable stb's used dvi out for direct use with tv' that had dvi prior to hdmi, which dont support hdcp. If the stb is doing hdcp on the hdmi I don't think that they would let people do 720/1080 out of the component video. Same logic used by the movie industry for hd-dvd and blu-ray players.

Would you pay $300 for the chance though especially having to depend on the OEM software? Even if it's off today one software update and poof.

I'm more teased by sub's comment....

i'm thinking it will be a component capture solution, there are some working on it already...[tho none work for hd resolutions yet]
Hava makes one that captures component, but can't get over 480i still tho it's supposed to eventually...and i heard of another component capture also with same problem...[maybe same chipset]

nice thing about component is there is no way to 'protect' it so no worry about hdcp etc.. and it does support everything up to 1080p and most boxes have the rgb outs in addition to hdmi,etc...

i think they are having problems detecting the video formats on input still..

Yeah, HDMI capture is probably not going to be in the future because of legal complexities.. I hope we will at least see component capture (YPbPr).. although I've read that the issue there is with HD resolutions it would be a very tasking job to capture and encode it in real-time, at least for now. Hopefully if it's mass produced for the general public the prices can come down to an affordable level.

STBs... such an evil thing. :p If only life was simple and easy and all the channels came beaming into our houses as DVB-T or ATSC and all those ads paid for everything.. then life would be so great.. Smile

What kind of STB you can always try firewire, you'd at least get local HD and maybe some basic cable. Mine has been stable since I have had it (others have had varied experience)
