I've got a weird problem (well to me anyway). I can put my computer int0 hibernate manually (and it'll wake up to record), but the computer won't go into hibernate automatically. I've got it set to 5 minutes, but even after an hour it doesn't hibernate. Any suggestions?

I'm thinking it's the dreaded norton antivirus causing the problems...

Also, I've read that scheduled tasks cannot wake from Hibernate. Can anyone verify this as it seems to be holding true for me.

Thanks,

Gbpvr uses the windows task scheduler to wake up for recordings and epg-update. This always worked fine for me and I think for almost everybody. Automagically going into hibernation however can be a pain in the ... For me it worked ok for a long time but lately I'm having problems with it too.
If you think Norton prevents your system from going into hibernation, that's a good reason to ditch it. There are good free av-appl.( AVG, Avast) other wise Nod32 is a very good light-weighted av.

why do you think it is NAV that is stopping the PC from hibernating?

perhaps uninstall it?

I gave up on NAV years ago, it became bloatware. Another vote for NOD32 here.

Mine certainly wakes from hibernate to run a Windows scheduled task (grab EPG) and also wakes for recordings. I find it more reliable, if a little slower than standby.

This is probably the least of the problems Norton is causing you. Get rid of it and you will probably feel like you upgraded your CPU and doubled your memory.

I have never lost data to a virus. I have however lost data several times because of bad Anti-Virus software. I have not used any AV for over 3 years now on several different machines and I have had no problems. The only effort I make to avoid viruses is that I do not use any P2P anymore.

I have to agree. I work with 9 computers at my office, 4 at home and when I left Norton, I felt like I lost weight. It's slow and bloated. I have tried and use a few both free and not. AVG, Avast and Bitdefender are much better.
The friends I have in IT seem to like Bitdefender most (I like it the least of the 3) but it does work on many platforms.

Just to make an example out of Norton and Symantec's stupid hog applications, I once had a problem that my Norton Navscan.exe file infact an infected virus, that is because people target viruses to be written to piss of Norton.
Use AVG, Avast, free and great updates and protection and less annoying pop up's like replacing Windows Firewall (which doesn't do much to protect) with another firewall like Trend Micro or ZoneAlarm (which has a excellent product for being free if you go with the basic but strong) firewall.
