I bought a STB on eBay and have recorded the first episode of Ken Burn's documentary "The War". There are three more episodes that I'll record and then burn to DVD. I haven't been able to play the file. I see there is a free download on Brothersoft.

What do I need to play these files? Software? A particular type of card? I'm new at this so be gentle. Ken in Toowoomba

What video card do you have? If it's an ATi x1000 series or later, I strongly recommend the AVIVO decoders (free download on ATI's site)

If it's something else, the MPV and MPA decoders will get the job done, but don't look quite as nice.

If you want to pay, nVidia's Purevideo decoder looks really good but can be quirky at times.

What do you use for your audio decoder if you are using AVIVO for your video decoder?

I honestly don't know. I have two that show up in the Audio Decoder drop-down box in config.exe: "MPEG audio decoder" and "MPA decoder filter". Right now it's set to "system default" and works great. If i try to set it to either MPEG or MPA, i occasionally get audio sync issues, so i've just left it at system default. I would imagine it's using one of those two, but it just works perfect if i choose system default. I'm using system default for the audio render box as well.

BTW, I have my office PC configured exactly the same because of the same audio sync issues with that one as well.
