I thought a recording done with the .ts format would be the same regardless of what recorded it. I guess not.
I recorded a program from my legal FTA receiver to an external hard drive and tried to play it in Nextpvr. It could not play it. In fact many "play" devices could not play the recording. Is this normal with .ts recordings? That only what recorded it is the only thing that can play it?

If you want to supply a sample recording, I'll tell you why it's not playing. Could be various things - like being encrypted etc.

Well, one thing for sure is it is not encrypted.
A recording sample, well, how big of a file can be uploaded to this site?

You'd have to put it somewhere like dropbox or onedrive, and just let me know the download link.

I will put something together within a day and put it in drop box. Will let you know when there.

Forgive me if I am teaching you to suck eggs. A .ts is a container filetype. A ts file can contain video and audio that is encoded in a variety of formats. For example, UK TV is broadcast as a MPEG2 stream for SD channels or as a H264 stream for HD channels. NextPVR copies the stream to a .ts file in the same encoding as the broadcast. Hence, a .ts file created by NextPVR as a recording ... will contain MPEG2 if the show was broadcast on a SD channel ... or will contain H264 if the show was broadcast on a HD channel. I need to have appropriate decoders on my computer to play MPEG2 and H264.

Have you tried to play the file using, for example, VLC? What does VLC say about the encoding of the video? ... https://superuser.com/questions/348159/v...ormation-e

Graham,
Interesting information for sure.
.
VLC - will not run the file, nothing, no errors.
Windows media player - player opens, nothing, no error.
Media Player S - Runs OK (not even sure where that player came from)
Kodi V17.4 - Runs OK
Nextpvr - The file was copied to the "Temp" folder and Nextpvr could not find it. Would not show up as a recording.
Copy file to the manual recording folder and then using the "Videos" from the main menu and doing the folder after folder after folded search for the file, once opened, Nextpvr only goes to a black screen and nothing.
.

.
One minute long file is here in dropbox.

Not sure how you captured this file or found h264 OTA in North America but the problem probably relates to the stream have two programs.

Code:
program_number: 0
   program_map_PID: 16
   program_number: 1
   program_map_PID: 257

A simple remux typically should fix that to eliminate the missing program.

As stated in my first post this was from my legal FTA (satellite) receiver. There is a lot of h264 "up there."

The PMT in this file is broken, since it doesn't list the audio/video streams, even though they're present. Most players, including NextPVR, read this PMT to locate the audio and video streams for playback.
