Vista Home Basic suitable for GBPVR?

I am thinking of upgrading to Vista now service pack one is out. I was going to install it on my main HTPC rig which is networked to a GBPVR client and also to my office PC. Both of which access the internet through the main HTPC.

Probably the main reason for my moving to vista is that I would like to try EVR renderer. As I am not really interested in the trendy aero interface would a copy of Vista Home Basic be suitable as its a few quid cheaper?

I do have another gig of memory in another PC I could use and I have just brought a 1.6mhz Dothan CPU off ebay for a tenner. Surley that would be enough as all it has to run is GBPVR?

It's a matter if your video card can process the video fast enough, for a stable gb-pvr experience. If you have to rely on your cpu, then even a 1.6 won't really be enough.

If all you wanted was a server, that sat in the corner and recorded and then you used an extender to view the files, then your system would be fine.

From what I understand, EVR will not be an option for you. And Aero is SUPER Video card and CPU intensive...and not available with Basic

The short answer though is, GB-PVR will run on Vista Basic. It's just you may not have enough power

I got Vista Business running GBPVR but that's with an AMD Dual Core, 8800GS Video card, and 3GB DDR2 RAM. Can we all say VROOOM VROOOM. I don't even do any gaming....

Well I've just dropped Vista on my 1.6mhz 2gig pentium m motherboard and it runs ok. Yes it takes longer to boot up. And it took longer to configure - all those stop auto play etc but once the GBPVR interface is up and running it works just as well as XP. Using EVR renderer gives a much better playback (i have had no end of stuttering with playback on XP) the picture is smooth as silk and the quality of the image in better. Perhaps the only drawback is channel changing now takes around 3 seconds whereas it used to take half that. But as I watch very little TV I can live with that. Finally another benefit is that recording start to play back quicker on my client.

I suspect the advantages are mainly due to the fact that I am installing an operating system which is upto date and has all the latest service packs. So I would certainly revisit XP when service pack 3 comes out but I very much suspect that the EVR renderer has me sold on vista

be interested to know how it runs when recording playback and comskip running

Its not about being right or wrong I very much appreciate your advice!

I run a Dual DVB-T tuner here in the UK which is SD 720x576 and that is the resolution that I have my graphics card set to.

It can record two channels while watching a previous recording and I can watch one channel while another one is recording without any problems.

I don't use comskip and the only other programmes running are HIP and uTorrent.
