I have a couple of tech questions related to the recorded video.

First off the file ends with ."dvr-ms", this is an MPEG format im guessing? I have a HVR 1100 and only recording from DVB so no transcoding.

Is this more or less the same as DVD mpeg 2? i know the audio codec is different.

I notice on my HD that I get around 12 hours of recorded content per 10GB of storage, which is a lot more than DVD.

The mux filter you use determines what type of MPEG2 file you get. The DVR-MS mux with give you a .dvr-ms file. The 'TS Mux' will give you a .ts file. The Cyberlink and ATI muxes will give you a .mpg file.

With digital TV, the bitrate is decided by the broadcaster, which dictates the size of the recording on disk.

Ahh I understand a bit better now, thanks. You say the bitrate is decided by the broadcaster, is this channel, show or country (UK FREEVIEW) specific?

Does the DVR-MS mux give the best results?

All of the above. Its up to Freeview UK what bitrate that dedicate to each channel. The top channels will probably be a higher bitrate, giving better picture and audio, and large recordings. Some less popular channels probably have a lower bitrate and worse picture, but smaller recordings.

Many users have different opinions on this. I think the DVR-MS mux gives pretty damn good recordings.
