Not strictly GBPVR related - but I cannot get the Audio working on my MSI K9N6GM board. Its RealTek HD Audio (7.1) using a ALC883 chipset. Have installed all the suppplied MB drivers and tried the latest from the msi website. However no sound device ever appears.

Ironically when I boot the boad using Linux (Kubuntu) the sound works fine and is definitly the RealTek 883.

Any suggestions?

Windows XP SP3

Try going to Control panel/sounds and audio devices/click on audio tab, make sure realtek is selected in the sound play back default device. I have the same issue with the RealTek HD 7.1 on my new board too. I had to uninstall the default windows audio for the Realtek to even show up there. Hope that helps. Simple, But easily over looked sometimes.

Thanks offrotor, unfortunately the hardware doesn't seem to be detected at all, there are - "No playback devices"

In the device manager there is a PCI device list as unknown - "The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)

To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver."

I think this is the device in question as it vanished when I disable unboard Audio in the bios. However I cannnot force the drivers to load.

I had a system awhile back that showed this code in the device manager. I think the onboard sound had died because the system already had a sound card installed. I forced the right drivers on it anyway because I knew it had to be the onboard sound. After that it wouldn't boot, Windows hung while starting up. Not sure if your onboard sound is dead, but be careful with the driver load.

I had a similar problem with hd audio on my system.
I think this is related to having to install the windows xp hd audio bus driver, there is a hot fix for it somewhere
it looks like its KB888111, I found some info on the net that indicates that sp3 rc 1 doesn't have hd audio drivers built in, http://technologyexpert.blogspot.com/200...t-mix.html , this link has info about how to get around it.
I did some more looking and it looks rc 2 refresh has hd audio built in. If you are running a older version of sp3 that might be your problem

Bingo, I think we have a winner - thanks!

I don't suppose you have a link to the download for the hotfix do you?

Thanks

Nice.

At the time i was installing on my board I had W2K installed. It was probably just me then and not a board issue at all.
