I have an AverMedia M780 i've had working with GB-PVR for a while. I can get the clear QAM HD channels no problem.

But it appears that if I record the HD channels, the recorded video file is not in HD - it's 720x480 like everything else. There aren't any settings for recording: I'm using the BDA plugin and MS-DVR transport stream.

All my local channels are 720p except 1 that's 1080i.

Anyway to fix this?

When it comes to digital recordings, it just writes the data received directly to disk via the mux filter. If it receives a 720p transmission you'll end up with a 720p file on disk etc. There is no code in there to re-encode digital recordings to different resolutions.

Its most likely the tool you're using to check the video file that is misreading the info, or that you're actually recording standard definition channel.

Most US cable co's provide two versions of the local stations, SD & HD. If your scan did not pick up any of the HD versions, then it's possible that they've encrypted those stations - although I was under the impression that cable co's were not permitted to encrypt anything considered by the FCC to be a local broadcast station in your area.

Some US cable co's such as RCN have decided to liberally misinterpret the FCC ruling and do indeed encrypt the HD version of local channels (even though the networks themselves broadcast them over the air in the clear) in a misguided attempt to get more revenue by forcing users to get multiple set top boxes for multiple TVs even if you wish only to get locals over one (or in our case have the ability to record locals via a computer without an aerial).

It must be the video player... VLC is reporting the mpg2 stream is 702x480, but in original size it's much bigger than that... I can't see the quality very well since i'm remote desktoped in Smile

Actually, I have RCN. All local HD channels are in the clear - I might have found a "bonus" HD channel but I forget what it was. I also found a couple SD digital channels, though it repeats the same 7 or so over and over again in the frequencies.

If you have RCN and local HD channels are not encrypted then its probably a matter of time, as they upgrade and add the new HD lineup they also encrypt HD locals over QAM. Perhaps enough complaints will make the difference. On the flip side firewire worked pretty well.
