Not really a gbpvr question, but it is on my recording box.... My system goes into standby just fine. I have hibernation turned off. I can wake it with the keyboard or mouse, but I can't get WOL to work, which is critical for my MVP use. I have power up by PCI/PCIE devices enabled in the bios, which the book also says enables onboard LAN. I also checked windows in the system section and WOL is enabled. I know lots of people use this board. Does anyone have it working for WOL? Any ideas:confused:

Well, I think I fixed it. I worked and worked and then found my stupid mistake right after I posted. This forum must be magicWink.

I thought everything in windows was turned on for WOL but I missed one check box. Now it seems to work, but there seems to be some random lan traffic between a couple of the machines on the net that wake it up. No biggie, sorry to waste your time.:o

What are the settings you used because I am trying to get it to work on my computer too?

You have to make sure your bios is set to allow S3 standby. (It probably is already) then you have to go into mycomputer-system information-hardware-device manager-network adapters and click throught the tabs and find where you allow it to be awakened by a device on the LAN. I also found people talking about MCEStandByTool that should help set it up. Hope this helps. Not at home now so I don't have all the details.

You might have to turn of a setting in network adapters settings screen, something like "only allow network administor systems to wake the computer"
(translation is mineSmile) It's the last option in the network-card's energy options screen. That did it for me.

Thanks Hans. I saw that setting, but then did not seem to be able to wake it (PC1) from my DVR system (PC2) when I needed to see a shared drive. I have read about magic packets but really don't want to try to add something like that. If my DVR (PC2)system was somehow set up as the network admin, then wouldn't it just wake up PC1 like it does now?

Also, then the DVR system would not be able to be awakened by my MVP, or would it?

By the way, where is Velp? I am going to be in Tilburg in a month or so.

Afaik (which is not very far), this setting is meant to prevent the system being waked up (is that english?) by all kind of network devices that might be exploring (pinging) the network.

Afaik the mvp uses the magic packet aswell. It's basicly a telnet message only sending the macadress 16 (I think) times in arow.
It's very easy to set up with mc-wol. I use it in my lan, the commandline looks like this: "C:\Program Files\WOL\wol.exe" 00112F434xxx
The last part being the macadress of the system you want to wake.
There is no install or whatever, just put the mc-wol.exe somewhere and run it with the right mac adress attached.

Geography:
Tilburg is in the south of the Netherlands Velp is in the middle-east (Wink). It's very close(east) to Arnhem. ~100 km from Tilburg.
Are you coming over here for work or holiday?
Have a good time anyway.

Wake-on-lan is magic packets. What you seem to want is wake on network activity. The difference is what Hans said about the "only allow management stations to bring the computer out of standby". Otherwise I found the server kept waking up as random packets went about the local lan.

The MVP with mvpmc and and does issue WOL requests - works very well and I have a shorcut on all my clients to send a WOL packet to wake the server up.

edit: beaten to it! "being waked up" = maybe better as "being woken up"... But considerably better than my Dutch - tot ziens.

Big Grin I was just walking the dog when the enlightenment came over me: WOKEN. When I came home I went to the forum, to find your message to confirm it, great. Is there telepathomagic in the air?

Great information guys. I love everyone's attitude here. So I will go back and enable the "allow only management stations..." check box. Then IF I understand this correctly, I will need to set up my DVR box to send a magic packet. This is where I am really dense and not getting it:o...Is there any way to set it up so when I want to wake the box to get a file that it will just do it, or will I have to hit a shortcut to a packet blaster first?
