does PSP AVC work in a MP4 DVD player

For those PSP owners do you know if PSP AVC format will work in hardware MP4 DVD players like those from Philips?

I'm hoping to convert my DVDs to a universal format that will play in my HTPC, PSP and DVD player (which I do not have but may get).

AVC, no, it doesn't. The MPEG-4 referred to on most DVD players is MPEG-4 SP (Part 2), common forms of which are DivX and Xvid. What you are referring to is MPEG-4 AVC (Part 10). There are standalone payers that already support MPEG-4 AVC, but most are nearer the $200 range than the sub-$100.

The PSP does offer support for certain MPEG-4 SP profiles, but for low bitrates, I wouldn't recommend using it. At this point, just convert to MPEG-4 AVC. Sooner or later, we'll see more standalones supporting MPEG-4 AVC.
