I am just undertaking a rebuild. Can anyone suggest a good xvid decoder. My experience in the past with decoder packs is that they do both good & harm to my system. I would like go with good only.

I've used this one for a while and have had no problems with quality. http://www.xvidmovies.com/codec/
I do agree with you that service packs can be more harm than good. Too many can be just as bad and not enough. Paul Custom ASUS Maximus X Hero, 16 GB Memory-ASUS GeForce 1050 Ti, H115i Pro AIO, 850W PS, CM H500P case, Corsair Vengeance RGB Ram, Samsung 970 EVO, HDHomerun Prime & Extend Tuners- running Windows 10 (and other goodies)

I do not know how it compares to others but I use ffdshow because it will play most file formats.

Another vote for ffdshow here. Plays all types of divx and xvid plus you can add some funky upscaling, sharpening etc if you're feeling adventurous.
