I removed all of Hauppauge software except the drivers, am using Vista.

Checked and checked and rechecked the configuration, I can not see what I am doing wrong.

Only .ts and Text are files saved.

Files open and run fine using VLC except no skipping.

The HD-PVR is supposed to record .ts files. Were you expecting something else?

Assuming you have an H.264 decoder and AAC decoder installed on your machine, then they should play. Maybe make sure you have these decoders explicitly selected on the playback tab of the config app, rather than relying on 'system default'. If you dont have any options listed other than 'system default', then you probably dont have any of the appropriate decoders installed.

If you install the Arcsoft Total Media software that came w/ the HD-PVR, GBPVR should be able to use those codecs to play it.

Seems wierd to me that VLC plays them - VLC seems to garble the video whenever I try to play them that way.

Personally, if I'm playing them back on my PC, I use Total Media Player for playback - seems to use the least CPU. For my TV, I use the popcorn hour.
