Anyone care to recommend a good mpeg editor so I can clean up some of my recordings (trim off the pre/post padding and commercials) and archive them to DVD?

Thanks!

VideoReDo has been my fav for a while. Haven't tried TMPGEnc in a while but have friends who like it. I'm sure there's some good free ones out there if you google for them but for me, VideoReDo is worth the money I paid for it. I haven't updated in a long time as it just works for me. I think they now have a TV suite version.

For occasional use, the Video Dub that's included in the free "studio" package from http://www.dvdvideosoft.com/ works good. Nothing fancy, but it's easy to use. Smile

Cuttermaran if you want frame precise editing. Videoredo for ease of use (bring money), Streamclip seems to do the job, in a basic sort of way. Virtualdub will require saving to an avi of some sort, and the newest verson of the editor that comes with Hauppauge cards works (finally) after the first few versions really sucked.
You can never have enough tuners!

Thanks for all the inputs guys! I just gave VideoReDoPlus a shot and it works GREAT and is EASY to use! Smile

I used it to trim a recording I wanted to keep on GBPVR for a bit more and when you modify it it disappears from the Recordings menu! It must keep a kind of database and doesn't like things to change.

Oh well, I just moved the modified file over the Video Library and it works fine.

That'll teach me to mess with the main file rather than a copy!

Thanks again! I'm off to play some more!

I used to use Cuttermaran, but even though it costs a bit, I use TMPGEnc 4 Xpress and LOVE it. I can do frame-accurate cuts without demuxing, use the VideoRedo cutlist output from Comskip to help mark keyframe cut points & their re-encoding has come a long way from version 2.5. MPEG2 & AVI files look great. Highly recommended.
