I recently purchased a usb "tuner card" from Newegg so that I can watch and capture antenna tv on my laptop. The usb tuner is:

AverMedia: AverTV Hybrid Volar Max (H826)

It doesn't seem to be compatible with GBPVR or at least I can't seem to find away to get the program to recognize it. Is there any way to get it to work out? I really think GBPVR looks like a great program (much better than the AVER media center), so I'd really like to use it. And since I've had the tuner for about a week, I'm not sure that Newegg would take it back.

Please let me know ASAP, I'd like to use GBPVR to record Kath and Kim for my wife if I can!!!

The analog side of this device wont be usable since it lacks the required hardware MPEG2 encoder.

The digital side should work, but you may need to add an entry to the bda.ini file. Run the filtercheck.exe utility in the gbpvr directory, then zip and attach the filtercheck.log and I'll tell you what that entry would be.

I apologize, I am new to this forum... I'm not sure where to get the filtercheck.exe at? I'm not sure what you mean by the "gbpver directory."

Also, if I will not be able to use this device for analog then this may be useless, because I don't get any digital channels where I am at. Are there any usb devices that you know of that I could use for a laptop and that would be compatible with gbpvr? If not, then maybe I will consider using my wife's desktop for all my tv/video shenanigans and installing a pci tuner card. I'd rather use my laptop, however, because it has a bit more power (a Core 2 Duo vs. her P4 :-) ).

Please let me know when you get a chance. No big rush anymore, but I would like to get this figured out sooner or later.

Also, this is probably not relevant here, but do you have any preferences on an indoor/outdoor antenna? I seem to be striking out with Wal-Mart crap (what can I say, I'm a cheap college student :-) ).

Thanks again!

Check that comment about not knowing where the filtercheck.exe file is... I wasn't thinking clearly. The output is attached.

Its in the directory you installed GB-PVR. Usually in "c:\program files\devnz\gbpvr"

There isnt too many external devices that have the required hardware MPEG2 decoder for analog. The Hauppauge WinTV PVR USB2 is one of those. I think there is also a Diamond one.

Sorry, I dont know in that part of the world. I dont know anybody that uses an indoor antenna here in New Zealand.

I just checked an that device should already be listed when you setup a digital capture source. Select the device called "AVerMedia H826 Hybrid Volar Max (ATSC)"

Ok, I'll give that a try. But I am 99.9% sure that I don't get any digital channels. At least they did not show up in Aver media center when I ran autoscan.

Thanks for your help. I'll give the digital set-up a try and see if I get anything.

Are there any specific pci tuner cards that you'd recommend for under $100? Or maybe just a manufacturer who's pci tuner cards are mostly compliant with gbpvr.

Some popular cards that are a good choice these days are Hauppauge HVR1600/HVR1800/HVR2250.

So I was looking at Hauppauge tuner cards and I came across the WinTV-HVR-1500 Notebook Express Card.

Actually, looking into this a little more, I think it is only for digital cable and ATSC digital tv.

Would this (or any other Notebook Express Cards) work with gbpvr?

I guess maybe a better question to ask would be, "what is the main component of a tuner card that would allow (or not allow) it to work with gbpvr?"

Thanks again!

This HVR-1500 device would only be usable for ATSC or ClearQAM. It wouldnt be usable for Analog in GB-PVR because it lacks the required hardware MPEG2 encoder.

This looks like a good device for you though: http://www.hauppauge.com/site/products/d...r1950.html. Both analog and digital would work.
