Installed 1.3.7 last night, thought all was well. But when I tried my regular habit of checking favorite channels via TV Guide, and hit Play, then PVRX2 froze up with the vague outline of the program information screen still available. I gave it a few minutes but ended up killing PVRX2.exe and checking the logs. I can't find anything obvious, although I'll zip and attach the last couple of rounds of logs.

I can watch existing recordings OK.

PVRX2 isn't changing channels using my IR blaster & HipSend when I request an immediate recording via TV Guide, although the capture source seems to generate a file as expected. I haven't tried viewing my ATSC card yet.

The RecordingService picked up a program normally overnight, although now that I think about it the external channel change artifacts normally visible were missing.

The same system was running the v1.2.13 just fine yesterday.

WinXP SP3
Hauppauge PVR500 with USB IR pod and blaster
AverMedia A180 ATSC receiver (haven't tried this yet)

Any ideas?

How would I go about reverting to the last version (I have the msi available)?

Thanks!

I also checked the Windows event logs and found nothing obvious.

I just removed 1.3.7 via Control Panel->Add & Remove Programs.

Then I reinstalled 1.2.13 via my archived MSI.

1.2.13 works well as I remembered, although I tried again to record a current show via TV Guide and it failed similarly. Locked up only briefly, after a minute or so the PVRX2 GUI was restored. I am able to Watch programs successfully through 1.2.13 TV Guide, and the external channel change via IR blaster works fine.

Note that I don't usually request current recordings via TV Guide, although I know this used to work fine on earlier versions.

Not sure what's up, but given the fact that I can revert to a working system I can try to help debug.

This is very weird. I had a scheduled recording tonight, so I left my resurrected v1.2.13 alone. The recording service wakes up and starts capturing data correctly; I can chase-play the recording, etc. However, the recording service is unable to change channels via the IR blaster. I can verify blaster operation due to a visible red LED, but it remains dark whenever the recording service starts up.

Channel changes from within PVRX2 TV Guide work correctly when I Watch a selected program (not Record).

Just for fun, I went back and forth a couple of times, interspersing successful TV Guide Watch channel changes, and unsuccessful Manual Recording attempts. The blaster works for the TV Guide but not the Recording Service.

Didn't see anything obvious in the logs, but attached those corresponding to these tests.

This may be nothing, but it may be a clue: every time I set up a Manual Recording, I noticed significant network activity marked by the firewall icon and WiFi bridge LED. I also found a few DCOM errors in the System events like this:

Code:
The machine-default permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID
{BC866CF2-5486-41F7-B46B-9AA49CF3EBB1}
to the user NT AUTHORITY\LOCAL SERVICE SID (S-1-5-19).  This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool.

I dug into the Help center and found that the DCOM CLSID corresponds to an NVidia Network Management app (my mobo has an NVidia GigE port). Does the Recording Service try to use network resources for anything, and might this be failing due to permissions problems?

I have no idea how this happened, because it was working great before I attempted the 1.3.7 upgrade. I'm kind of dead in the water at the moment.

I dug through the Windows System events, and found examples of that NVidia network app permissions failures over a month ago, so they didn't start with any GB-PVR changes.

This is one of the stickier problems I've faced in over 2 years of GB-PVR use.

I'm by no means that familiar with gbpvr but did you backup the gbpvr folder before the upgrade? If you did, then after uninstalling 1.3.7 and installing 1.2.13, you should be able to copy the old database and xml config files back and you'll be back to what you started with.
I uninstalled 1.3.7 quickly and went back to 1.2.13 and this all worked really well. But if you didn't back things up, well...

All my settings and database are preserved through 1.2.13/1.3.7 transitions, so that is not the source of my problem.

My current problem is that PVRX2.exe can change channels via EXE and IR blaster (HipSend), but the Recording Service can not.

I hope that someone can shed light on the differences between these two applications' use of common resources, so that I can get a clue about how to proceed.

The reason for this is because HipSend transfers info to HIP via the clipboard, but the recording service and the desktop dont share a clipboard so this communication fails. There is an easy work around though, go into Start -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services, then view the properties of the GBPVR Recording Service, and tick the 'allow service to interact with desktop' setting.

If this works, I'll fly to NZ and plant a big sloppy kiss on your face! Wink

Thanks for the info, sub. Can't verify it until I return home, though.

Do you think that a similar problem is responsible for my woes in 1.3.7? If you look back through the thread, I wasn't able to successfully execute a HipSend.exe channel change either through that version's PVRX2 or Recording Service.

I would prefer upgrading to the new version just to stay current if at all possible.

Again, many thanks for the guidance.
